Cliches are easy to come by in the sports world. Defense wins championships. The season is a marathon, not a sprint. Fantasy Football has a few of their own but one that is very true every year is, “Championships are won in the middle rounds of the draft and through pick-ups on the waiver wire.”
To be able to dominate in the draft and move fast on the waiver wire you need to have some deep knowledge of players. Only fantasy football owners can tell you who the back-up runningback is for the Houston Texans or who the 5th wide receiver is for the Eagles. There, buried in the depth charts, are the players who will carry you quietly to the playoffs.
So who are the names you need to know in 2009? I’ll go over a few guys whose names may or may not jump to mind. Either way they will be names you’ll want to know when setting up your draft sheets and when waiver wires open up. Not every backup is worth having because, well, if they were any good at times they would be starters. So let me help you sift through the refuse and fine the gems. Read more

Ballin’ or Fallin’ is an unorthodox look at the fantasy football values of players from around the league taking in everything to see if a guy’s value is going up or down.If your guy isn’t one of the ones looked at in the feature article or you think I’m full of it shoot me an email at airram98@hotmail.com, start a thread in the forums, or post a question in the comments below and I’ll answer. I don’t just answer one or two softball questions, I answer all of them. Seriously.
Because this article is preseason and will cover a ton of players I’m splitting it into two parts. Part I covered the studs and now it is time to cover the duds. In Part II we see who is Fallin’ in the rankings. Alright let’s do this:
Fallin’
Quarterbacks
Eli Manning- Plaxico shooting himself in the leg shot Eli’s season in the foot. The talent on the roster right now for the Giants wouldn’t start in some of the now defunct arena leagues. His production with Plax outside of spots has been that of a fantasy football backup rather than starter. Without Plax Eli will be lucky to net more than 220 yards per game and 1 td. The Giants organization and the east coast misled media can blow as much sunshine up your skirt as they want but the truth comes from the Rockies. If you’re staring at Eli as your QB1 remember these iconic New Yorker words: Fahgetabouit’!

Welcome to the post draft feeding frenzy known as the rookie draft. If you’re like me, you don’t care about having high first round picks which could cost you lots of cap space. I like grabbing five or six cheap second and third round picks a year. After all, someone got Tom Brady in either free agency or a low round pick way back when, and is probably still laughing all the way to the bank. Read more

This division will be largely unchanged heading into the 2009 season. The pecking order remains largely intact, and once again will feature the Indianapolis Mannings as the preseason favorites with Tennessee and an improving Houston squad likely fighting for a Wild Card spot. Jacksonville is in a bit of a rebuilding mode and will be better, but will probably fall victim to a rugged divisional schedule. I’ll focus on how their respective 2009 drafts panned out and how they may impact the coming season and beyond. Read more

In a continuing series, let’s take a look at perhaps the most interesting division in the entire NFL entering 2009, considering the dramatic storylines. Buffalo deals with a suspended star RB while welcoming one of the all-time Diva WR’s, Miami enters year two of the Parcells era armed with an innovative new offensive twist and questions about overacheivement, New England celebrates the return of their record-breaking QB amidst more coaching and front office losses, and the New York Jets hope to reward their shiny new head coach with a shiny new young face of their franchise. How did their respective drafts impact these franchises? You be the judge. Read more

I spent the better part of two straight days last weekend ignoring family, pets, and household chores trying to decipher which teams emerged as winners and which ones dropped the proverbial ball during the NFL’s annual “Player Selection Meeting”. After comparing player projections to where they were ultimately chosen, looking at how various teams either did or did not address needs and fill roster holes, and pouring over a ridiculous number of online articles chronicling draft grades, I came up with my down and dirty analysis of who won and who lost in each division. After letting the dust and post-draft hype settle a bit, here are some cliff notes on each AFC North team, highlighting their best and worst picks, and whether they won or lost their NFL Draft track meet. Stay tuned for the other AFC and NFC rundowns. Read more
