Take It To The Bank - Week 9

By Jeremy Miller/Brandon Anderson
10/31/08

With week eight in the books, Jeremy Miller and Brandon Anderson are back with their wild and crazy predictions they feel are as good as gold. Of course, they don’t always agree on these and there is sure to be some disagreements along the way. So where are they going with their predictions this week? Read on to see the issues that these two feel you can take to the bank for week four and beyond.

From Jeremy Miller:

Watch out for Moss….yeah, Randy! Cassel is learning how to use him and the numbers are coming around.
After the Brady injury I stated that while Moss was not the Elite WR he was with Brady, he was still a top 10 WR. Well after a slow start with Cassel, Moss and Cassel have started to pick up steam and is headed for the top 10 by the end of the season. I expect him to keep this up and be a consistent threat for your fantasy team as you head into the stretch run for the playoffs.

Clinton Portis is an injury waiting to happen.
Portis has been absolutely money this season and is currently the number one RB in the league. However, how long can you expect this to last? Well last year he carried the ball 325 times and so far this eason he is on pace for a career high 374! The issues that 300 carry RB’s have the following season is well documented and his heavy work load so far this season would make me very nervous as a Portis owner. I’m not telling you to rush out and trade your workhorse, but I’m sure not telling you not to either.

Dallas is a mess, yet they still find a way to knock of the Giants on the road.
I’m willing to finally back off the Giants missing the playoffs stance, but I’m not going to say it will be an easy road for them to get there. All signs point to a Dallas beat down in the Meadowlands, which is exactly why I am going in the other direction on this one. This one will be ugly, and the Cowboys D steps up and finds a way to get the win.

Greg Jennings has been amazingly consistent so far, but he will stumble out of the top 10 WR’s by year end.
Jennings numbers are very good so far this season, but it’s been three games since he has cracked 100 yards. With some of the receivers behind him picking up speed Jennings needs to get it going or he will be quickly behind them. I just don’t see enough explosive games from him to keep him up here. Jennings will be a nice number two receiver the rest of the way, but not the number one he’s been during the first half. This will drop him out of the top 10 for the year. If you can get good value for him, may be a wise move to trade him now.

  • Bounced Check - Greg Jennings looks to me like he is becoming the next Torry Holt. He catches a long pass just about every game, and he’s had 84 yards or more in every game but his most recent one. Come on Miller, just because the guy has one bad game and a bye week, you’re giving up on him? Jennings is on pace for close to 1600 yards and he’s a proven TD threat who should get his scores in bunches. Even if he slows way down, he’s going to end up with 1300+ yards and close to double digit scores. He’s got a couple tough matchups, but there are only a couple WRs I’d rather have than him the rest of the way. -Brandon Anderson

From Brandon Anderson:

Daunte Culpepper is going to return to the NFL this season and be a fantasy factor down the stretch.
It looks pretty clear that Culpepper is going to be making a return sometime soon. He had a potential workout with the Chiefs this year week and did work out for the Lions, and there are enough awful QBs in the league right now that he will be on a team soon. Don’t forget that this guy is a monster to tackle and has a cannon for an arm, and he will be playing with nothing to lose on an awful team down the stretch. I’m not saying he’ll be a winner by any means, but 200+ yards passing, a bonus 3-5 points on the ground, and a sprinkling of TDs will do you well, especially if your league does not have major negatives for turnovers. Also, don’t underestimate the impact that Culpepper could have on someone like Calvin Johnson or Dwayne Bowe with a guy that can finally throw the long ball. Be ready.

  • Bounced Check – Man, I knew you always had a soft spot for Culpepper, but I thought even you would have given up on that ship by now. Let’s just face the facts; Culpepper has not had a relevant fantasy season since 2004! He can’t read a defense, and is not as mobile as he once was. Culpepper was a creation of a motivated and young Randy Moss. He is not that player he once was, not even close. If he can’t read a defense when he understood the offense he was in can you imagine the results if he would be tossed into a train wreck of a team with a limited understanding of the offense? Culpepper left the Lions facilities without a contract and it appears that may have broken down. Even on the off chance he does sign somewhere in the upcoming weeks we are already in week 9, week 10 before he sniffs a facility, that leaves you 4 weeks of the regular fantasy season (I doubt playoff teams will need Culpepper to come save the day). Two of those weeks will likely be swallowed up by bench time and learning the offense. So that leaves two weeks….on a very bad football team! Sorry, this is a pipe dream of some guy you remember playing four years ago when he was worth something…..

This is finally the week that Cincinnati gets their first win, at home against Jacksonville.
Every Jaguars game this season has ended with a one score W or L, and this team is simply a bland team that plays down to its competition. Their leading rusher MJD is averaging under 50 yards a game, and they still haven’t had a passing game since Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell left. Now let’s be real, the Bengals are not good no matter how you slice it. Cincy has played every team tough this season other than the turdfest in Houston last week, and they are bad but not 0-8 bad. They finally get a W this week.

The Rams beat the Cardinals at home this week and pull within a game of the division lead.
I’m finally convinced that the Cards are a pretty good team… at home. But Arizona is 1-3 on the road and hasn’t shown the ability to close. Meanwhile the Rams are really coming around and almost won on the road in New England last week without Steven Jackson. Expect SJax back this week, and expect a Rams win as put themselves into position for possibly the biggest week 6 playoff long shot in playoff history.

Texas Tech takes down Texas Saturday night for their biggest win in school history.
Alright, not exactly an NFL pick, but there are plenty of guys on both of those rosters who will be playing on Sundays very soon. Texas’s pass defense is banged up, and Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree are hungry and ready. #1 Texas goes down on the road this weekend and sends the BCS into a mess and a half.
