Good Owners Are Always Working The Wavier Wire.
Working the Wavier Wire is important. Good owners often upgrade their teams via the WW and make contenders out of pretenders. Of course we all use the WW at some point, if not you will probably be in trouble unless you have put together the perfect storm of a team.
Ok, we all work the Wavier Wire but do we work it enough? I will throw out several things to consider. Ok, your team is put together well and all your players performed well in Week one and you are #9 on the WW picking scheme. No need to pay attention to the WW this week. No, even if your team is looking good you should study the FAs availible in your league like you had the First WW pick in week one. If nothing else just to get an idea of who is out there in your Wavier Wire/Free Agent pool. Now for a few things for your consideration.
Consider this. you noticed a few players that showed promise in week one. Let's say 3 caught your eye, but you are #7, no sense putting in a request? Wrong, I have gotten a lot of talent off of the WW even though I was late in the picking scheme. Don't assume that all 6 owners ahead of you are putting in selections to be picked. I have often picked up top WW talent just because several owners ahead of me didn't participate in Waivers that week. Just picked up RB Chris Perry in one league that drafted early and just ran their first waivers. I was pick #8 and Perry shouldn't have been around by then but I made the attempt and was pleasantly surprised.
Consider this. Always check what happened just after Waivers are run. Sometimes there was some good talent dropped during Waivers. Say an owner had a QB get dinged up he may have had to drop a decent WR just to shore up his QB corp for a few weeks. I have seen stacked teams have to drop some decent talent do to an injury crisis.
Consider this. OK you have Witten as your TE you will be playing him most weeks your backup TE is not spectacular but you only need him one week. So even though you noticed TE Anthony Fasano TE for MIami had a nice outing in week one no sense really making a play for him, after all I have Witten. You should always be trying to tweek your team. Don't be lazy, be proactive. If nothing else you should be working the WW hard even if it is for a minor upgrade at your backup TE position. Constant tweaking keeps your teams overall talent level up. Now by grabbing Fasano to use in your bye may only added a few ponts to your teams total points this season. You will probably will only use Fasano once during Wittens bye week and your backup TE while worse will suffice, why bother? Because you have prevented Fasano from being used against your team by another owner once maybe twice during the season. Part of being very active on the WW is preventing your opponents from getting more talent. While you just get a small upgrade at backup TE depth somebody else may really need Fasano and it might be a big upgrade for his team. The Chris Perry pickup mentioned earlier falls into the keep talent away from your opponet category also. Perry makes for a small upgrade in my backup RB slot but he could have been very valuable to someone else.
Consider this. This one is for newbies. You have drafted and you have your kicker and his Backup. You have drafted your D and your Backup D. Check your WW/Fa lists, if there are a dozen Free Agent kickers out there drop your backup and add some talent elsewhere. Just use one of those Free Agents during your bye week. Same can hold true with Ds. Don't carry 2 Ds on your roster if there are plenty available on the WW. Most of you figure this out at some time during the season, earlier there is more talent on he WW.

This is a great read Coach, I especially like the angle that you took with athletes like Anthony Fasano, very helpful and very informative. I look forward to reading your next one.Posted 09-12-2008 at 04:53 AM by dannywest

Thanks, a lot of owners don't work the Waiver Wire hard enough. We all use it to add talent to our teams but we should also work it hard to keep talent away from other teams.
I usually look at my opponents team before Waivers are run that week. If he is weak at TE and I see a decent TE on Waivers I may make a play for the TE so he doesn't get him. This can be really effective on bye weeks as your opponent maybe suddenly shorthanded at a key position.Posted 09-12-2008 at 09:45 AM by Coachnorm

I can appreciate and consider Coach an excellent read.
I'm not about the w/w. That's all I got.
I mean, 50 moves? Get a life or learn how to draft.
I'd like to see limited w/w moves.
Just me, just pissed about the Buckeyes losing tonight.
Coach knows. If this is your slice, he's your baker.Posted 10-25-2008 at 10:29 PM by Mustang Jones
