Stick a fork in them Birds, 'cuz they are DONE

I lied.
A few weeks back I started saying that the Birds were so bad there was no hope anyway, so I wasn’t going to get my (Eagles) panties in a ruffle over the wins/loss column. “We’re not going to the superbowl,” I calmly told my mother on the phone after she related a few angry fan stories from Philly sports radio, “so why worry about the playoff race? Everybody just needs to chill out.”
I thought I believed it, too. I guess that win against the Jets made me feel more optimistic or something. But somehow, going into Sunday’s game against the Bears, my hopes crept their sneaky little claws back into my heart. And you know what? I felt it happening. It seemed ok. All right, the offense continued to struggle and stall in the red zone. I know as well as anyone how often those early FGs can come back to bite you in the ass. But we had them. We dominated. They couldn’t move the ball. And finally, after we scored our TD, we were able to pin them to the 3 yard line with 48 seconds left and no timeouts. Our defense will hold. Game over.
If you believe that sort of thing, you’re not an Eagles fan. Remember last season, when TB beat us with a 62 yard FG in the final seconds? When the Giants came back from a 21 point deficit to beat us in OT (ending Jevon Kearse’s season in the process)? These are quite normal occurrences for an Eagles fan. Mr. EC is only starting to understand why I can’t stop watching until the last seconds are off the clock, even if we’re making Tom Brady numbers.
Anyway, it’s really over now. Save a miracle, in which we win 9 out of the next 10 games (I am already declaring the game against NE a loss), we aren’t going anywhere. And I’m not going to let those little claws back in. It hurts too much.

| | yeah, we'll see. i'm not sure how i feel about that talk... i've been a big supporter of andy reid over the years, and i continue to be very grateful to him that we've become such a successful franchise over the past decade... but it may be time for a change. that said, i really can't imagine jeffrey lurie firing him. he might leave voluntarily i guess. he does need to deal with his family issues i'm sure. as well, i really don't want mcnabb to leave. i think a lot of his issues right now are at least in part due to his knee injury. he's only one year out from his surgery, and he's still looked pretty good most of the time. the WR corps has been mediocre at best with occasional brilliant flashes (thank you kevin curtis), and we've been without L.J. Smith (Matt Schobel has dropped a few key passes). the defense has been mostly good but we've missed dawkins and sheppard... anyway, i am interested to see what happens, for the rest of the season and next year. |

| | This blog freakin' rules. Boy there will be some changes coming this offseason. Personally, I say dump McNabb and build the team around Westbrook and a good WR picked up in FA. Start the kids at QB. Have a cheese steak and watch the wins pile up |

| | Ha ha thanks Sarge! I'm glad you like my blog ![]() I guess I should get off my butt and start blogging again, but it's been pretty hectic in EC-land. You know, playing in all those FF playoff games and losing (except one! ).I've been saying for years that Westbrook was the most important player on the team--we saw that especially in 2003 (?) when he missed the end of the season. But I don't know that we need to dump McNabb necessarily... What we really need is some fresh coaching. I really like Andy Reid and what he's done for the organization, but he is so hit or miss. And he doesn't usually adjust well at halftime, so those miss games are often ugly. Mmmm... how I would love to have a real cheesesteak!!! Or a hoagie. my mouth is watering. (I'll be home in February!!! Yum yum yum) |
