College Bowl Breakdown - New Years Eve and Beyond
Posted 12-17-2007 at 11:03 PM by Da Bomb
Armed Forces Bowl – Dec 31 – California -3.5 vs Air Force
What You Need to Know – At one point this year, Cal was all set to become #1 in the nation. Instead they choked in the final seconds against Oregon State and lost 6 of their final 7, almost missing bowl season altogether. Air Force comes to this bowl game thanks mostly to a dominant run offense led by diminutive RB Chad Hall.
Complicating Factor – Air Force is in its first bowl game since 2002, thanks in part to big early upset wins over Utah and TCU and a 2nd place MWC finish.
Why You Should Watch – This game features two of the most exciting players in the country, the overrated but speedy DeSean Jackson from Cal and the underrated and speedy Chad Hall from Air Force.
Prediction – It’s the Armed Forces Bowl, so give the nod to Air Force and its superior rushing attack.
Humanitarian Bowl – Dec 31 – Georgia Tech -4.5 vs Fresno State
What You Need to Know – It was another solid but ultimately disappointing year for Georgia Tech, who will play in a bowl game thanks to an easy slate but lost a lot of big games all year long. Fresno State is another one of those high-powered WAC offenses whose only four losses this season were to ranked teams.
Complicating Factor – GT coach Chan Gailey was fired after another disappointing campaign and replaced by Navy’s Paul Johnson, a great coach but a strange fit with the standard triple option offense he is used to running.
Why You Should Watch – If you can’t think of any other reason, watch it for the Smurf Turf up in Boise, and don’t adjust your television. While you’re at it, take a look at one of the best RBs in the nation in Tech’s Tashard Choice.
Prediction – I don’t think I buy Paul Johnson meshing with the Tech players just yet, and I think the Bulldogs score plenty of points and score the upset.
Sun Bowl – Dec 31 – South Florida -7.5 vs Oregon
What You Need to Know – South Florida scored big wins over Auburn and West Virginia early en route to becoming #2 in the nation before losing three straight and falling back to mediocrity. Oregon racked up huge back to back wins over Arizona State and USC in November en route to becoming #2 in the nation before losing three straight to close the season.
Complicating Factor – Dennis Dixon probably should have won the Heisman. Instead a torn ACL left him on the sideline over the final month watching his team utterly fall apart without him.
Why You Should Watch – Two months ago, this looked like a pretty likely matchup for the national title game. It’s nowhere close now, but pay your respects to two teams who were great… for half the year.
Prediction – Oregon is simply a bad team without Dixon, and USF’s defense is the difference. They win and cover.
Music City Bowl – Dec 31 – Kentucky -1.5 vs Florida State
What You Need to Know – Kentucky peaked with a stunning home upset over #1 LSU in mid-October but ran out of gas afterward, losing four of their final five games. It was a pretty forgetful season for the Seminoles, whose only real highlight in a 7-5 season was a road upset over previously undefeated Boston College.
Complicating Factor – Florida State still doesn’t seem to have a quarterback, and they continue to split touches between ineffective Drew Weatherford and Xavier Lee.
Why You Should Watch – Kentucky’s senior QB Andre Woodson is the real deal, a legit superstar who has a good chance to make a difference in the NFL some day as well.
Prediction – The Noles simply don’t have the offense to keep up with UK, and the Cats win this one comfortably.
Insight Bowl – Dec 31 – Indiana vs Oklahoma State -4
What You Need to Know – The Hoosiers completed a season straight out of the movies with a moving victory over Purdue in the final week to secure a bowl berth in the wake of former head coach Terry Hoeppner’s death this summer. Oklahoma State’s biggest highlight of a mediocre 6-6 season was almost certainly coach Mike Gundy’s “I’m a man! I’m 40!” speech.
Complicating Factor – Oklahoma State is 2-6 against bowl competition this year. Indiana is 2-4. Something’s gotta give.
Why You Should Watch – This game matches up two of the best receivers in the nation, OSU’s Adarius Bowman and Indiana’s James Hardy. Hardy is the best receiver I’ve seen all year, an NFL superstar just waiting to happen.
Prediction – The Indiana story is just too good to not end with a win against the Cowboys in a high scoring shootout.
Chick-fil-A Bowl – Dec 31 – Clemson -2 vs Auburn
What You Need to Know – Clemson can be as hot and cold as any team in the country, looking unbeatable at times and coming up very short other times, usually in its biggest games. Auburn played a tough SEC schedule and didn’t make quite enough plays outside of a big upset win at Florida early in the year.
Complicating Factor – Keep an eye on Clemson’s coach Tommy Bowden, who almost left to head to Arkansas and is now rumored to be interested in the West Virginia opening.
Why You Should Watch – Take a look at two teams talented enough to be playing in a BCS game but just too inconsistent this year to get there.
Prediction – Clemson’s offense is prettier, but Auburn’s defense doesn’t care. The Tigers win – the Auburn ones.
Outback Bowl – Jan 1 – Wisconsin vs Tennessee -4.5
What You Need to Know – Wisconsin brought back most of last year’s team and tried to win games with a running attack and tough defense but lost all three of its tough Big 10 road games. Tennessee started the season a few minutes away from firing Phil Fulmer and ended it a few minutes away from playing in the Sugar Bowl with a near upset over LSU.
Complicating Factor – Philip Fulmer. Win big and he may get an extension, lose and he may still not make it through the year as head coach.
Why You Should Watch – It’s New Year’s Day and it’s the first game. You don’t really want to watch the parade with your kids, do you?
Prediction – Go with the SEC over the Big 10 here as the Vols win and cover.
Cotton Bowl – Jan 1 – Missouri -3 vs Arkansas
What You Need to Know – Missouri was a great story this year, undefeated all season outside of two tough losses to Oklahoma. Arkansas was its usual wild roller coaster ride, culminating in a crazy triple OT victory over LSU.
Complicating Factor – Arkansas has had an entire offseason already with the “resigning” of Houston Nutt followed by about half of the ACC turning down the Razorback job before finally prying Bobby Petrino away form the NFL.
Why You Should Watch – Take a look at two of the four Heisman finalists in a game that should be one of the most entertaining of the bowl season.
Prediction – How will Mizzou react after a disappointing finish left them out of the BCS altogether, by coming out flat or making a point? The way to beat the Tigers is by passing the ball, which Arkansas couldn’t do all year… at least before Petrino showed up. This is a toss-up for me, the pick being Mizzou by a last second field goal.
Gator Bowl – Jan 1 – Texas Tech -6 vs Virginia
What You Need to Know – Texas Tech gave up a lot of points and scored a lot more most of the time, but what else is new? Virginia just about killed most of their fans this season with one nailbiter after another, with five of their victories coming by 7 points… combined!
Complicating Factor – Future top 5 or 10 pick Virginia DE Chris Long (yes, Howie’s kid) should be able to pin his ears back and go after the QB all game long.
Why You Should Watch – Tech’s offense is always fun to watch and generally seems to be almost unstoppable when Mike Leach has a whole month to prepare his team for a bowl game.
Prediction – Virginia isn’t as good as their record, and Tech’s offense is just too good. Red Raiders win big.
Capital One Bowl – Jan 1 – Michigan vs Florida -11
What You Need to Know – Michigan bookended a bunch of meaningless midseason wins with two losses at the start and finish of the season when it actually mattered, and it’s flat start was one of the stories of the season. Florida had some setbacks in its title defense with a rough middle of the season but ended the season with at least 45 points in four straight victories.
Complicating Factor – Michigan has already played a couple of spread offenses this year. You may remember a couple of games back in early September against Appalachian State and Oregon.
Why You Should Watch – Do you really need reasons? How about Heisman winner Tim Tebow, or if that’s not enough, new coach Rich Rodriguez’s debut for the Wolverines?
Prediction – Go with athleticism, coaching, the SEC, and spread offenses – Florida in an embarrassing rout.
Rose Bowl – Jan 1 – USC -14 vs Illinois
What You Need to Know – USC wishes it was playing for a title shot but probably doesn’t deserve it after the year’s biggest upset at home against longshot Stanford. Illinois is the benefactor of tradition, becoming the second 3-loss BCS squad after a great season (for the Illini at least) and the right side of a big upset over Ohio State.
Complicating Factor – Illinois may be playing with wide eyes on a stage bigger than they’ve been in a decade, while USC is playing in its sixth straight BCS bowl in its home away from home, the Rose Bowl.
Why You Should Watch – It’s the Granddaddy of ‘Em All!
Prediction – Speaking of embarrassing routs, it could be a pretty ugly day for the Big 10. USC wins huge.
Sugar Bowl – Jan 1 – Hawaii vs Georgia -8.5
What You Need to Know – Hawaii completed an amazing run this year with yet another comeback win and is going dancing in its first ever mainland bowl game on the big stage. Georgia had a couple of rough SEC losses early before getting going behind star freshman RB Knowshown Moreno and enters this game one of the hottest teams in the nation.
Complicating Factor – Both of these teams think they should be playing in a title game, and they both have a legitimate gripe. Don’t be surprised if an impressive winner here steals a couple #1 votes in the AP polls.
Why You Should Watch – Did you watch last year’s WAC BCS-buster? If you didn’t bother, you missed the game of the year. Don’t risk doing it again.
Prediction – I believe!!! Colt Brennan and the Rainbow Warriors stay in it all game and win the game with a last minute drive.
Fiesta Bowl – Jan 2 – Oklahoma -7 vs West Virginia
What You Need to Know – Oklahoma is another of the many teams with a legit gripe at playing in the title game, winning a tough Big 12 by closing out the season with its second dominant win over Missouri. West Virginia seems to be the only BCS team not complaining, having blown its shot after at home against Pittsburgh on the season’s final evening.
Complicating Factor – This game features one of the game’s best coaches against… no one is entirely sure who just yet. Rich Rodriguez bailed on his team for Michigan and may have left the team in disarray.
Why You Should Watch – Pat White, Steve Slaton, and Noel Devine are always worth a watch for the Mountaineers.
Prediction – Rodriguez’s loss is felt, and Oklahoma’s defense is just too good. Sooners dominate and win big.
Orange Bowl – Jan 3 – Virginia Tech -4.5 vs Kansas
What You Need to Know – Va Tech got blown out in early September in LSU but responded by winning all but one of its remaining games, and they probably should have survived that one against BC as well and would be playing for the title if they had. Kansas won its first 11 games and gave Missouri all it could handle but just didn’t have enough ammo to get to the Big 12 Championship game.
Complicating Factor – Kansas has a lot of emotions, but don’t forget that Tech is still playing in the wake of leftover emotions after this year’s tragic school shooting.
Why You Should Watch – Take a look at this year’s biggest Cinderella story in Mark Mangino and the Jayhawks.
Prediction – Kansas is a great story, but Tech is just a better team, and they win by double digits.
International Bowl – Jan 5 – Rutgers -10.5 vs Ball State
What You Need to Know – Rutgers was a big story last year but a big disappointment this year, going just 3-4 in a watered down Big East with its only big moment an upset over South Florida in October. Ball State was an entertaining MAC team with a high scoring offense led by QB Nate Davis.
Complicating Factor – Rutgers is stuck playing in Toronto after preseason dreams of BCS or even title hopes.
Why You Should Watch – Take a look at a future NFL star, and I’m not talking about Rutgers RB Ray Rice. Ball State’s TE Darius Hill is the next Antonio Gates.
Prediction – Rutgers should win comfortably and will cover the spread, barely.
GMAC Bowl – Jan 6 – Bowling Green vs Tulsa -4.5
What You Need to Know – Bowling Green is another one of those high scoring MAC teams with a pretty nondescript season behind rising star QB Tyler Sheehan. Tulsa is a high powered C-USA offense that rolled up a lot of points and wins behind senior QB Paul Smith and his gaudy stats.
Complicating Factor – Paul Smith has scored at least 3 TDs in every game, a tally of 54 with a real long shot chance at Colt Brennan’s record of 63.
Why You Should Watch – You’ll be exhausted after some tough defenses and NFL playoffs all weekend, so what better way to end a Sunday than to watch a shootout that should see close to triple digits scored?
Prediction – Tulsa wins an entertaining shootout by a touchdown.
BCS Championship Game – Jan 7 – LSU -4.5 vs Ohio State
What You Need to Know – LSU has already been #1 in the BCS twice this season and lost in triple OT both times in thrilling finishes, but after a wild BCS finish, they get one final shot at #1 here in the title game. Ohio State was undefeated for most of the season before a shocking home upset to Illinois but then recovered to beat Michigan and get back to the title game for the second straight year.
Complicating Factor – College football fans won’t soon forget the embarrassment of last year’s national title game loss by the overmatched Buckeyes against the more athletic Florida Gators.
Why You Should Watch – Whether you like the matchup or not, this is the national title game as college football has yet, so you’ve got to be watching.
Prediction – It will be a tough defensive battle, and the more physical and better coached team is the one that will come out on top. In the season of #2s losing, #2 goes down one more time. Ohio State scores the “upset” and takes home the national title.
