The Fantasy "Experts"

Posted 10-26-2007 at 04:15 AM by dannywest
There has been something that has been bothering me as of late. It seems, that almost every time I sign on to this site, read updated articles and new blog entries, there is always that one little comment stating how ridiculous the poster is in his/her thoughts, predictions, whatever.

Granted, I'm not particularly disgusted by the fact that people disagree with one another, hell, most disagree with me and I've grown customed to it, but what gets me is this: no one really knows what they are talking about, and while we do our homework, we look up stats, we analize matchups of games past, and we put in hours of time to trying to pen an imagined outcome that we hope is close to what really does take place; but the bottom line is we just don't know.

There are too many unknowns involved to make a truly accurate prediction; weather, injuries, bad calls, all of these are variables that we simply can not take account for.

But with that said, why read what someone else thinks? There is the obvious answer, that dispite all the times we are wrong, there are an equal, if not more, times when we are right. There is the fact that the reader is too uneducated about this sport to make their own predictions, and there is also the fact that perhaps the reader is just too lazy to go out and do the research for themselves.

But we "experts", we love this don't we? Love being able to go a bar and impress the guy sitting beside you with stats and info that only a sports announcer would know. Love to be able to put our opinion on the line and take an often harsh, and undeserved, verbal battering. Love to be proven right, time and time again.

What I am getting at, people, is this: if Mike puts Cleo Lemon at 19th on his weekly QB rankings, take it for what it's worth. It's not like he turns on his computer, signs on to this site, then starts randomly throwing out QB names. There is plenty of research involved, question him, and he'll more than likely prove how much he knows. If Da Bomb says sit LT and start Reggie Bush (though I doubt this scenario would ever come up), you should probably do it because, again, he's done the research to know why.

No one here is an "expert", but often we do have a pretty good idea of what we are talking about.

I am sorry for this long and pointless rant, but alas, it has been something that's been on my chest for a few weeks now. And by all means, I am not saying to never disagree with these guys or with anyone, hell, question them if something seems suspect, they all know that I do. Just don't be a dick about it. Period.
