The WESTern Perspective (Week 5 Preview)

The WESTern Perspective

Version 2.11

With four weeks of football in the books, you can now accurately determine your team’s strengths and weaknesses, and whether you are left with a what-am-I-going-to-do feeling or an I-am-a-fantasy-football-god mentality, keep in mind that things in the NFL and in fantasy football can change very, very quickly.

Week four saw another elite receiver go down and now, with Anquan Boldin, Joey Galloway, and Marques Colston out, certain teams are going to be left hurting at the wide receiver slot. Fortunately at the Sports Outlaw, we have plenty of guys who are more than capable of finding you athletes to plug in, whether it be Jeremy Miller’s Weekly Waiver Wire tips that help you find the best players available in free agency, Scott Henkel’s Ballin’ or Fallin’ blog that depicts who’s value is on the rise and who should remain on your bench, or my, well, let’s say, superior insight as to what players are going to outshine the rest from week to week, you needn’t go further than this site for the best in fantasy football advice. Check out the home page for links to these articles and other great features.

There is, however, a bit of good news for those owners out there who have been plagued by injuries. Seahawks receivers, Deion Branch and Bobby Engram will both be taking the field for the first time this season which not only is good for those that own them, but those that own Matt Hasselbeck and Julius Jones. Hasselbeck will now have some options who will finally be able to catch the ball and Jones will now not be the sole driving force of the offense, opening him up for the big play and while Seattle will be facing a tough New York defense, don’t expect them to go down without a fight.

In the wake of the Boldin injury, Arizona wideout Steve Breaston stepped up in a big way. Breaston caught 9 passes for 122 yards, tack on his 202 return yards and Breaston was unquestionably the best performer that no one started. If your league accounts for return stats than Breaston is undoubtedly a guy worth picking up and one who definitely earns some serious thought about a starting position. Breaston and the Cards take on the explosive Buffalo Bills this week, and in order to keep Arizona in striking distance, expect Kurt Warner to look his way early and often.

With Drew Brees at the top of his game despite the loss of Marques Colston and Jeremy Shockey, it is certain that key players’ on the Saints’ roster stock will rise. Lance Moore is one of these player. During the Saints’ matchup against the 49ers, Moore caught 7 passes for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns. Look for Moore to repeat this performance again and again, and even when the two main receiving threats in New Orleans return, I’d expect Moore to remain an invaluable option within this offense.

I’d be wrong if I went this entire article without mentioning two standout performances of this past week. Firstly, and more importantly, was the showing of Tampa Bay’s PK Matt Bryant. After the untimely loss of his 3 month old son, Matthew Tryson, Bryant not only made it to the team meeting but also was a star that shined brighter than all others in the Bucs victory over the Packers. Bryant hit 3 field goals and 3 PATs on Sunday and was named the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week. My condolences go out to Bryant and his family and while nothing will lessen the blow of the loss of his youngest child know that we are all rooting for him.

Secondly I’d like to mention the performance of Brett Farve. Farve threw for 6 touchdowns and hit on 24 out of a total 34 passing attempts. Don’t expect Farve to repeat this showing in the near future, however, look for he and the Jets’ receivers to be on the same page for the remainder of the year.

With bye weeks well underway, it is now more important than ever to keep a watchful eye on your players’ matchups and don’t be afraid to take a big name out for a guy with a more favorable game, remember, you are a fantasy football legend in the making, do something memorable and then credit me later.
