The WESTern Perspective
October 31, 2008
Version 2.14

I’ve always found the following month of fantasy football to be the most exciting, teams that are sitting pretty for a playoff appearance can often experience a dramatic fall from grace while teams that have been plagued by weeks of humiliating losses suddenly find themselves skyrocketing in the standings. Owners spend more time searching the waiver wire for the gem that is certain to push their team over the top than they do with family or friends and finally, after 8 grueling weeks, the message boards finally start to heat up with some high quality trash talk.

Yes my friends, this is, without question, the most important part of your 2008 fantasy football campaign and whether you are looking to squeeze your way into the playoffs or just maintain that stellar run that you’ve been having all season long, look no further than this blog for those helpful pointers that are guaranteed to give you the winning edge.

Denver runningback Michael Pittman has quietly been putting up solid numbers all season long and with 316 yards and 4 touchdowns he’s proven to be a better fantasy player than Willis McGahee, Joseph Addai, and Larry Johnson. And while Pittman hasn’t found the endzone since the 3rd week of the season, he will be coming off a bye week, well rested, as the Broncos starting runningback, a role which he has played twice already this season and both times he touched the ball twenty times resulting in a combined 197 yards. This Sunday, against Miami, look for excellent production from Michael Pittman along with that trip to the endzone that he is well overdue for.

Another back who should be looking at an excellent week is Tampa’s Earnest Graham. In fantasy terms, Graham has not had a dominating season by any means and yet he has still managed to rush for 4 touchdowns to accompany his 498 yards while playing the role of, primarily, a fullback. This week, Graham will be seeing the rather lackluster defense of the Kansas City Chiefs, a team who has allowed more rushing yards than any other team in the NFL with an average of 196.9 yards per game. Look for both Warrick Dunn and Earnest Graham to have standout performance but it is Graham’s hands and bruiser running style that will give him the slight edge.

In the last three weeks, quarterbacks Derek Anderson, Chad Pennington and Matt Cassel have found their names amongst the best the NFL has to offer, and while all three of these athletes should be dependable in helping your team be victorious through these final weeks of the fantasy season, it is Derek Anderson who has the most potential to put your team amongst the best in your league. Anderson started off the season looking like a glorified back up quarterback and there were plenty of rumors that he would become just that, however, from week 6 to week 8 Anderson has thrown for four touchdowns and, more importantly, no interceptions. This week the Browns will face off against the league’s best rushing defense, and with Jamal Lewis virtually shut down and Kellen Winslow back in the starting lineup, look for Anderson’s last few weeks of greatness to spill over into your week 9 scoreboard.

Last week I mentioned that Visanthe Shiancoe should not be left out of your starting lineup, this week, the Vikings are coming off of their bye against Houston, a team who has by no means been stellar at shutting down the passing lanes. Look for a half dozen receptions and a touchdown from this emerging tightend.

For those of you struggling at the quarterback position, in recent weeks Tyler Thigpen has looked a reliable source of points for your fantasy team. In the last two games Tyler has three touchdowns under his belt, two through the air and one on the ground, and zero turnovers. This week, however, Thigpen will see one of the league’s most stingiest defenses in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, look for Thigpen’s current hot streak to come to an abrupt end and if you treasure your fantasy season, and can avoid it at all, Tyler Thigpen needs to stay out of your week 9 lineup.

Next week I will continue my playoff push advice and hopefully will continue to see similar results that I’ve given you all year.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween, see you next week.
