It Must've Been the Panties

It’s amazing what a 56-21 thumping by the Eagles can do for my frame of mind. [Note: last week I was so uninspired after the Monday night loss to the Redskins that I couldn’t even muster up a few lousy paragraphs for the blog here.]
This morning, everything’s sunshine and Tastykakes. If you don’t know what Tastykakes are, you need a trip to Philly. Right away. Try a butterscotch krimpet; that’s my personal favorite. Peanut butter kandykakes are also great (My sister likes coconut juniors. Friends of mine swear by the French apple pie. To be honest, I haven’t yet met a Tastykake I didn’t like). Have an Italian hoagie while you’re at it. I prefer a Wawa hoagie—you can order your desired toppings on the touchscreen menu. Plus, Wawa has all the Tastykake varieties you could possibly desire. And soft pretzels at the checkout counter. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
But I digress…
The Eagles Victory. Sure, you can try to burst my bubble. It was Detroit! The Lions! At home! Of course the Birds won—nothing impressive about it.
Well, yeah, but maybe you haven’t watched the last two Eagles games, because there wasn’t much to cheer about. They STUNK! I’d already given up on the season. All right, the defense has been ok. Not great, mind you, but ok. Interestingly enough it seems they are stopping the run more than the pass right now, in contrast to the last couple of years. But then, they did manage a second half shutout yesterday, and that with the backup corner and safety playing, against that exciting new Martz offense. I’m pleased.
Maybe Donovan McNabb is like the Patriots—the more shit flying around him, the better he performs. I don’t know. But he certainly did a better job with his accuracy this week, and looked much less tentative. (Much less? What an understatement. He hadn’t completed a pass longer than 20 yards until yesterday. And scored only one offensive TD.) Reggie Brown has yet to emerge from his funk, but… you can’t have everything.
All right, so things aren’t completely hunky-dory in EagleChick land. For one thing, my fantasy world is not very bright this year. It looks like I’ll be 2-2 again this week (still an improvement from my 1-3 Week 1). You know what, in my funky league I got crushed by McNabb and Westbrook, and I couldn’t be happier about it. And all right, Mike got me in the SOFFL. I guess you can’t expect Steve Smith to score 40 points every week.
The good news is, it looks like I will finally put numbers in the win column of my two loser leagues. That is, assuming Reggie Bush doesn’t outscore Drew Brees by 25 points. (Oh please, please, let me win this one. I know I should never have traded with Da Bomb, but I’ve paid my penance! I have to watch Antonio Gates on his team for the next 5 years!!!)
My scores in the SO Fantasy Challenge, while improving, also leave much to be desired. And the Cowgirls are 3-0 at the top of the NFC east. Makes you ill, don’t it?
Anyway, back to the Eagles. You think McNabb just felt better? You think Detroit just sucks? You think the play-calling was better? Execution? Defensive pressure? Sure, that’s all true. But the real reason it all worked out was the panties. Don’t ask me why, but I know my positive energy sent across the globe with a fifteen second delay from the internet stream is what really made the difference in this game. You’ll never convince me otherwise.
