Bengals vs Ravens Preview

Posted 09-06-2008 at 09:43 AM by Miller
So week one starts with a trip to Baltimore for a clash with the Ravens. The Bangals are coming off an injury filled preseason but look to have most of their stars ready to go. The Ravens are banged up as well and stars Ed Reed and Willis McGahee's playing status are still up in the air. Even if both play, they could be limited in their contributions. What looks to be a week one gift for the Bengals, the Ravens are forced to start rookie QB Joe Flacco. Flacco has struggled against first string defenses this preseason, but did manage to make it through without throwing an interception.

The Raverns will need him to continue this if they hope to defend their homefield week one. The Bengals figure to unleash their new defensive scheme under new DC Mike Zimmer. Expect Zimmer to bring the heat to Flacco as he mixes up his blitz packages early and often. If the Bengals can rattle them early and get out to an early lead I believe this offense will have problems all day long. I expect to see the Bengals force at least three turnovers in the game and this will be one of the keys if the Bengals want to walk out with a road victory.

For the Bengals offense, rhythm is the key word for me. Palmer and company need to find one against a Ravens defense that he has had success against over his career. With the injuries and suspensions in the Ravens seconday, their lack of depth back there leads me to believe Carson could be in for a very good game. The Bengals will need it, the one thing I expect the Ravens to continue to be strong at is stopping the run. They were second against the run last year and they have a 19 game streak in which they have not give up a 100 yard rusher. But that doesn't mean that Chris Perry will be silent, expect him to get 20 touches or so on the ground and be involved in the passing game as well.

Now it's prediction time! If the Bengals have any hope this year this is a game they MUST win. This Ravens team is inexperienced on offense and long in the tooth on defense. Bengals start out the year strong and get a quality win on the road.

Bengals 24
Ravens 13
