The Sergeant's Office: Huskers gaining respect

Husker D Earns Black Shirts

Once known for its tough defense, Nebraksa football had a tradition, established by accident in 1964, of wearing black practice jerseys, hence the moniker, "Black Shirts".

The tradition stood strong throughout the 70's and 80's, and was perhaps most feared with Tom Osborne's title teams of the 1990's. Enter Frank Solich and Bill Callihan, and the "luster" slowly wore off those proud jerseys, until ultimately they were ripped off the Nebraska defense on October 16, 2007, after consecutive blowout losses to Missouri and Oklahoma State. Nebraksa would give up a record 76 points to Kansas a couple weeks later, and ultimately Bill Callihan was terminated.

Enter Bo Pelini, a fiery defensive coordinator turned front man for the Huskers. Pelini brought stability and physical play to the Nebraksa football team, and has already made an impact, with the Huskers bowl eligible and still in the hunt for the division title.

11 Husker defenders returned from a team meeting Tuesday to find their blackshirts hanging in their lockers. Reportedly they responded in the subsequent practice by intercepting 12 passes.

To me, this is about more than those jerseys. This is about an attitude of winning permeating throughout the entire program by AD Tom Osborne and Bo Pelini.

Nebraska's offense is playing much better football, and the Husker's nearly upset current #2 Texas Tech. The arrests, rumors, and poor play that plagued the Callihan era are gone.

Next year, I expect big things out of the Huskers. You read it here first.
