1st Down or 4th & Forever: Vol.5

Posted 10-12-2007 at 03:40 PM by The Ram
Alright sports fans here we are! The BEST part of the year; FOOTBALL SEASON! And with that is the ushering in of another great feature Sports Outlaw offers it’s readers, “1st Down or 4th and Forever”.

Since there are so many players to track and so little time for you to track them, we found the guy on our staff with no life at all to do all the dirty work for you. From high atop the Rocky Mountains Sports Outlaw’s Scott “The Ram” Henkel brings his biting commentary each and every week letting you know if that player in the news is a diamond in the rough or a fossilized piece of dinosaur poop.

Here’s the way it works:

1st Down” rating means this guy is either going nuts or showing signs of busting out of the straight jacket. Either way he’s someone you need to keep your eyes on in your fantasy football league or make a move on and start em’.

A “4th and Forever” rating means this guy was getting some love either in the pre-season or is a one week wonder and is now ready for the bench or the waiver wire OR JUST PLAIN PISSED ME OFF. I believe the chant goes a little something like this, “OOOOOVER RAAAATED!! Clap, clap, clap-clap-clap-clap!!!”

So let’s start lighting fires and breaking hearts:

1st Down

Runningbacks:

Kenton Keith: You’ve got to love it when a guy like Keith gets a nod to fill in and then produces like this. He’s done great things with the ball and is averaging 5.0 yards per carry with sparse use this season. Then in his first start he loads up on yards and tds against a still respectable defense. The nice thing to see with this performance is the added receiving yards. This kid is a for real back-up and should see more time on the field giving Addai some rest.
Kenton Keith…..1ST DOWN!!!!

Brian Leonard: In keeping with giving some love to back-ups, he’s flipped the switch and started running like a tailback instead of a fullback. He was shifty in the holes and made guys miss before lowering the boom. He racked up 102 yards on only 18 carries against a defense that stuffed Willie Parker last week. But he also contributed in the passing game giving Gus “Headbutt” Frerotte a needed release valve. Hmmm, big back who runs and catches well….who does that sound like? Seriously, this guy was about the best Stephen Jackson impersonator the Rams could have picked in the draft. Great fantasy football option to get more carries and could still again start if Jackson isn’t ready to go.
Brian Leodard …..1ST DOWN!!!!

Wide Receivers:

Jason Witten: He’s a tight end, so what’s he doing in the wide receivers section? Cause he’s carrying this team in receiving yards and crucial plays this season. He’s having a career year and is out in front of TO in production. Witten has been a fantasy football stud in 2007. More important for Cowboys fans is that Witten is making big play and drive continuing catches every game….unlike some other Cowboy receivers to be named later.
Jason Witten…..1ST DOWN!!!!

Braylon Edwards: He’s been nothing short of fantastic this season averaging over 20 yards per catch. Wow. He’s scoring fantasy football points almost at will and against damn good pass defenses like Oakland and Baltimore. I wasn’t too sure about him this season with the quarterback situation as jacked up as it is but he’s the real deal.
Braylon Edwards…..1ST DOWN!!!!

Quarterbacks:

Tony Romo: That look of shock you have is nice. Frame it and put it in your Christmas card. He tossed 5 picks and two were returned for tds. That’s not just bad, it’s freaking terrible. So you might be wondering, “What the hell, Ram? I started this turd and he got me close to negative points!” Well he threw 4 of those gems in the first half and still led his team to a stunning victory. You want a quarterback with those kind of brass nuts to lead your team, NFL or fantasy. And the guy has been lights out until Bufflo. So take this dip in performance as a bad game but understand the kind of metal Romo is made of and start him with confidence.
Tony Romo…..1ST DOWN!!!!

Jason Campbell: After a dismal start Campbell put on a clinic for the Lions. The passes were mostly dink and dunk but he looked like a different quarterback who might be getting comfortable in the system. So I’m bringing it to your attention to keep in mind that he’s juuuuuust about ready to break out. If mini-Moss and El get healthy he could be trouble for defenses as he’s already developed a rapport with Chris Cooley.
Jason Campbell…..1ST DOWN!!!!

4th and Forever:

Runningbacks:

Willis McGahee: Willis sucking makes no sense to me at all. I was one of the guilty party who hyped him this pre-season. I mean seriously, how could it go wrong? Better offensive line, quarterback, defense, etc. And all he’s doing this season is running into the backs of lineman and going nowhere. He’s getting plenty of attempts as he’s already topped the century mark in carries. But he only racked up 100 yards in a game once against the Browns….and with that I rest my case.
Willis McGahee …..4TH DOWN!!!!

Clinton Portis: Let’s keep “The U” bashing trend going, shall we? He had the Lions and can’t seem to muster any magic? Now there were others with worse yards per carry averages but for Portis his milktoast fantasy football production seems to be pandemic. He’s yet to register a 100 yard game and isn’t getting the number of carries we’ve come to expect. Not a good thing from a guy you’d expect to be your number one guy.
Clinton Portis…..4TH DOWN!!!!

Wide Receivers:

Terrell Owens: Let’s just get the obvious out of the way: 2 receptions for 25 yards freaking bites. This terrible production isn’t a matter of him not getting looks. He dropped critical passes or let corners out muscle him for balls. Wait, someone out muscled Mr. Spandex? I like the way he rallied behind his team and behaved during the press conference. Golf clap for him. But his production on the field fell far short of what Owens should be registering. Drops have plagued him in recent years but his drops Monday night were at the times he needed to make big plays. And they all hit him in the freaking hands. Most Boys fans are just happy to eek out a win. But they should be very nervous about their big play receiver not making big plays. Remember TO: don’t let your mouth write checks your ass can’t cover.
T.O…..4TH DOWN!!!!

Chris Chambers: Up until this past weekend Chambers has covered his not finding the endzone with racking up yards and catches for PPR leagues. But this past weekend he was shut down before the Fins were forced to the running game. If you drafted him he’s likely in your number one slot and his recent production and more importantly losing Green for the season is likely to impact his production down the road. Let’s hope he got handed Cleo Lemon and makes lemonade in the form of a few touchdowns.
Chis Chambers …..4TH DOWN!!!!

Quarterbacks:

Matt Hasselbeck: He looked lost and without any options against the Steelers. The loss of Branch hurt his production a ton more than I thought. There seems to be no other serious passing option and the running game has yet to get going. He’s in no danger of getting yanked but it was pretty disheartening to see him get owned so completely Sunday.
Matt Hasselbeck …..4TH DOWN!!!!

Joey Harrington: Let me be the one to take the final whack at the last nail in Harrington’s NFL coffin. This guy just can’t seem to get his act together. I can grant him that unlike Detroit he’s got a bunch of B-listers to throw to in Atlanta and Petrino’s offense sucks. But I think the next port of call for Joey Heisman will be the CFL. Between Joey and David Carr both going the way of the buffalo my wife is going to have to wait to find her next qb heart throb.
Joey Harrington …..4TH DOWN!!!!

This Week’s Off Topic Rant:

Time to talk about Smoke Dog Henry. What kind of freaking dumbass do you have to be to screw up your last shot at making something of yourself in one of the most coveted running back positions in the NFL? I guess dumb enough to smoke up IN SEASON in a league that is fast turning into an Orwell like Big Brother. He had the chance to be the man in my Mile High City. In a system that made something out of mutts like Reuben Droughns and Olandis Gary. Now he’s one ruling away from sitting out a year while in his late 20’s.

Henry pissed hot and now he’s trying to fight it. Hey Travis, how about being a freaking man and owning up to your mistake? Try and be some kind of example for your 9 kids. Moron.

So that’s my opinion. If you don’t like it, sound off in the comments section below! If you like it, praise me for the bear trap tight logical thinker that I am. Thanks for your opinions either way. Until next week! See you in the forums!
