Ballin' or Fallin' - Week 9
Welcome to Sports Outlaw's Fantasy Football stock exchange known as Ballin' or Fallin'.
Simple concept: If a player is Ballin' his stock is on the rise. If a player is Fallin', he's not living up to the hype.
We'll take a weekly look at the players that matter in the realm of fantasy football.
Ballin'
Head Coaches
Mike Singletary - A break in format is in order after Singletary went old school on his listless 49er club. I grew up in Pennsylvania and played high school football for what would be considered today “throwback coaches”. You know the guys. They don’t care if you are an All-Star or in my case a coach’s kid. They will bounce you off a wall or have you running gassers and/or stadiums all night long if you pull some panty waist crap or show you aren’t committed to the team. Singletary’s benching of former 1st round draft pick Vernon Davis and subsequent unrepentant rant in his first press meeting as head coach elevated one of my favorite all time players into the ranks as one of my favorite all time coaches. If the Niners know what they’re doing they will lock up The Samurai Linebacker as their coach of the future for this rebuilding team.
Quarterbacks
Drew Brees – This guy is amazing. To rebound after a poor showing takes some guts. To do it against the team that tossed you to the curb takes focus. To do all that on another continent is just short of mindboggling. We hashed this out in the forums for a very lucky individual who had the tough choice of starting Brees or Schaub this week . Must be nice. And as predicted Brees exploited a very weak Charger pass defense on his way to another 300+ multiple touchdown day. Forget what happened a little while ago and start Brees all day every day. Elite QB and must start.
Marc Bulger – Bulger couldn’t go anywhere but up so he hits this week’s Ballin’ category after putting up good numbers without Weapon #1 Stephen Jackson. With the improved play of Donnie Avery Bulger again has a deep threat to compliment Holt who at this stage in his career is a fine possession receiver. I still wouldn’t start him outside of injury or desperation but he has to be elevated from bench to situational bye week fill in.
Chad Pennington – I had Penny here last week but need to address the consistently good production he’s been able to maintain over the course of half a season. He was smart enough to figure out early that Ginn Jr. was matched up against a guy with a bad wheel and proceeded to mercilessly rip the Bills secondary apart. He’s making great decisions and is scoring each and every week. Elevate to weekly starter and QB1.
David Garrard – Garrard has put together a few decent games and racked up a ton of rushing yards. Matt Jones has stepped up and is making plays for him which will continue as his suspension is likely towards the middle or end of November. Don’t expect 59 yards rushing every game but with his ability to run Garrard is a must start. Elevate to weekly starter and QB1.
Keep your eye on:
Tyler Pigpen Thigpen – DO NOT DRINK THE PIGPEN KOOL-AID!!!! He will not outscore Brett Favre every week so don’t be that guy that dumps a solid weekly starter or fill in for him. But do monitor progress as he has two extremely talented receivers in Bowe and Gonzalez. If Pigpen continues to improve he might be worth a roster spot but remember this is the guy not that long ago who completed almost all of his passes to the defense.
Daunte Culpepper – You think he’s going to the Chiefs? Not so fast. I think Culpepper may be closer to being a Cowboy than a Chief. Brad Johnson will likely be benched in favor of unknown 3rd stringer Brooks Bollinger. Now the Cowboys have had good luck with elevating unknown 3rd stringers and the last guy who went from holding a clipboard to dating Jessica Simpson will be back in the lineup in a few weeks. BUT the Cowboys must win now. If they continue to tank they won’t be in playoff contention when Romo returns. Jerry Jones wants to win this year and already showed he doesn’t have a spending limit on winning a title this season. Deep balls were Culpepper’s specialty so it would stand to reason Jones will have C-Pepp on speed dial. Culpepper has been on a few teams already so a crafty owner would be wise to stash him in the event he adds Dallas to his resume.
Runningbacks
Brian Westbrook – Westbrook was not healthy in his game against the Falcons. I saw him wince in pain after he scored touchdown #2. But Westy at 75% is still better than 60% of starting NFL runningbacks. Owners were nervous about starting him because of the times they were burned on gametime scratches. The gamblers were rewarded with a warrior’s performance. Monitor how his body reacts to a full load but if he’s practicing he should be playing. Elite RB1.
DeAngelo Williams – I’ve been surprised at how well Williams has played most games. The Cards wanted to shut down Delhomme and the passing game thinking Williams and Stewart couldn’t win the game for the Panthers. Well they were wrong and Williams racked up solid numbers on the road to a victory. Pre-season speculation was that Stewart would be the starter by now but Williams isn’t ceding the job just yet. Elevate Williams from flex play to decent RB2.
Ray Rice –Rice had the starting job Week 1 but lost the reigns due to inconsistent play. This week it appears the Ravens figured how to use the explosive back in both situational running plays and more importantly to Rice owners in the passing game. He may not be the guy who you want starting every week for you in fantasy football but he should be elevated from bench to situational RB2 in point per reception leagues or flex play.
Kevin Faulk – If you followed Ballin’ or Fallin’ last week I updated the Patriot rushing situation in the comments section telling you to play Faulk over Green-Ellis when Sammy Morris went down. If you listened to me and started him you looked like a pro as he racked up over 100 combined yards and a score through the air. He will continue to produce for you as Morris will miss more time and Jordan hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Upgrade to RB2 in point per reception leagues and very solid flex play.
Marshawn Lynch – Lynch plays in one of the worst sports markets in the nation and doesn’t get the kind of press he would receive if he played for New York teams South of the Canadian border. He’s been running hard for the Bills and recently has been putting up better numbers receiving. He’s not having the kind of monster blowout season I expected but his play has been improving. He should be in your lineup weekly as a RB2 or weak RB1.
Kolby Smith – Between Charles and Kolby Smith I figured Smith would shine during spot duty during Larry Johnson’s timeout. Charles showed he was a bigger playmaker but has been diagnosed with the dreaded “high ankle sprain” and will miss the next few weeks. He had major fumbling problems and some durability concerns at Texas so the possibility is high he won’t return this season. Smith has made noise in the past on good matchups so pick him up quickly. The League will likely level additional suspensions for LJ so he may be all they have available. Flex option with RB2 upside.
Wide Receivers
Anquan Boldin – More impressive than Singletary’s refreshing attitude in coaching was the return of “Q” after a brutal hit and recovery from surgery. He didn’t have any rust and put up ridiculous points for the Cards. Outside of Hines Ward there may not be a tougher wide receiver in the NFL. If the Cards had the cap room I’m positive he’d be signed months ago. He’s a guy just about every fan can root for and he’s been a stud in the world of fantasy football. Must start WR1.
Donnie Avery – This is pretty much the year of rookie wide receivers making massive impacts for their teams. Avery is now the third rookie wide out deserving weekly starting consideration. Bulger is stating he’s now getting adjusted to Avery’s world class speed and it showed this past weekend. He’s a WR2 to very solid flex or WR3 play.
Steve Smith – As long as he’s healthy and Delhomme isn’t having one of his meltdown sessions Smith is one of the top 3 wide receivers in the game. The problem with Smith and why he’s not higher is because of Delhomme’s eventual meldown games. He’s still a must start but don’t count on him having monster games like this every week. Solid weekly WR1.
Roddy White – He matched up against the best cover corner in the NFL and still managed a monster outing. It is safe to assume White can now produce weekly against any corner and should be now considered in the same class as guys like Steve Smith. Solid WR1.
Lee Evans– I’ve been down on Evans for years but saw something different this past weekend. He was able to make chain moving grabs in addition to his big play ability. I’m moving him up from a weak WR2 of flex to solid WR2 with WR1 potential.
Randy Moss– That makes two consecutive weeks that Cassel remembered he has the NFL’s single season td record holder to throw the ball to in a game. Last week I mentioned he needed one more game to prove he is going to be worth a weekly start. Well here it is. I’m moving him up from a weak WR2 or flex to weekly starter due to his amazing talent.
Keep your eye on:
Chaz Schilens – With a name like that I expect to be writing about an episode of “The O.C” and not an up and coming NFL wide receiver. Before this game the Raiders coaching staff made sure to mention Chaz was going to get more involved in the passing game. Normally you can’t trust anything coming from a coach that involves a player’s involvement in the passing game but they made good on their promise. Target Schillens in deeeeeeeeeep leagues or keeper leagues. Not someone to start yet but maybe worth a roster spot to stash just in case.
Tight End
Antonio Gates– Gates is now healthy and showed against New Orleans what owners hoped for when taking him in the 4-5th round. Be prepared for a monster second half of the season from Gates if he stays healthy. Must start TE1 and WR2.
Any TE playing against the Chargers – This week Billy Miller, who was cut almost weekly, lit up the Chargers. So take a look at the schedule and start whomever you see lining up against this terrible defense.
Defenses
New York Giants – The Giants have been able to get it done despite a laundry list of injuries. They shelled Big Ben causing multiple turnovers and sacks. The Giants are a weekly bet to score well for you.
Fallin'
Quarterbacks
Donovan McNabb – His matchup against the Falcons should have been a good one for the pass happy Birds. McNabb started the season on fire but has cooled to luke warm recently. Still a solid weekly starter but is being paced by guys like Pennington and Cassel recently. QB1 but not elite.
Ben Roethlisberger– Ben went up against one of the top defenses so a lights out performance wasn't expected but Ben was horrible. The Giants brought a ton of pressure and the Steelers for some reason didn't see fit to move the pocket which resulted in multiple turnovers and sacks. Consider this an abboration but certainly something to consider if you have a backup with a favorable matchup. QB1 but no longer a weekly start.
Brad Johnson – Brad's time as primary backup is just about over. Johnson is pretty easy to gameplan against because he lacks a deep ball. The short yardage game works for guys like Witten and Barber but the Cry Baby doesn't like being a possession receiver so a change is almost inevitable. Wade Phillips already named him the starter next week but I wouldn't start him as he could be pulled at any point in the game. Bench.
Brett Favre – Well it took a while but this week was the reminder that while Favre is a hot hand most weeks the occasional multiple pick game is just part of being a Favre owner. Just Brett being Brett. Don't push the panic button and just know that Favre just decides to throw ill advised passes every once in a while. Weekly starter although you may be able to pry him away from owners not savvy enough to read Ballin' and Fallin'.
Runningbacks
Justin Fargas – The Raiders are neck in neck with the 49ers in the race to be the most jacked up franchise and as a result decent talent like Fargas and Russell are the biggest losers.....I take that back Al Davis is still the biggest loser in the Raiders organization. Fargas is averaging 3.5 yards per carry and has yet to find the endzone. Bench if you have other options.
Edgerrin James– Edge isn't worth starting any more now that the Cards dusted off Kurt Warner's old Iowa Barnstormers' playbook and are throwing the ball 40 times per game. Even when he averaged 20 touches per game he still wasn't producing. Bench the once great fantasy back for better options.
Maurice Jones-Drew– MJD mustered one good game and then flew back into mediocrity this week. He's on pace for just over 650 yards this year which would be a major step back. He's a one week wonder until he can find more consistent output. Flex play at best.
Wide Receivers
Antonio Bryant– He had an average outing despite a torrid start to the first quarter. Still a weekly starter but shouldn't be counted on for anything higher than a WR2 or Flex.
Kevin Curtis– I know its a bit harsh including him after his first game of the season. It seemed like there was a ton of build up towards Curtis' return and to me he fell short of expectations. I still feel he can be valuable to those loyal owners that held onto him however he shouldn't be counted on for more than a WR2 or flex.
Hines Ward– He was blanketed all game and his quarterback was shelled in the backfield resulting in a sour performance. He's still a valuable start who could produce WR2 numbers but a more conservative Flex ranking would be appropriate most weeks.
Limas Sweed– When Santonio Holmes was benched for being a moron some owners quickly snached up Sweed hoping for a breakout performance. Well there was a reason he couldn't pass Dallas Baker. Not this season, guys. Drop in favor of a more seasoned wide receiver.
Tight End
Vernon Davis– Welcome to the Old School Vern. My guess is that Davis will have a bit more common sense and effort next week however Shaun Hill is the new starter which doesn't bode well for any 49er receiver. He should produce better but won't live up to his potential until there is a decent quarterback behind center. Desperation starter.
