Sgt Johns College FF D/ST Rankings

Defensive rankings are always very hard to do from year to year. This is a listing more of 6 defenses that should be on your watch list to draft more as potential producers for your team than as something you had to draft in the last round.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes -
9 starters return for a defense that lost huge in Vernon Gholston's departure but still should dominate a soft Big 10. They dont give up alot of points and that more than makes up for the lack of turnover production.

2. USC Trojans - USC returns 8 starters off a team that forced 28 turnovers in 2007. Losing Sedrick Ellis hurts, but as the Trojans prove year in and year out, the cubboard is never bear in Carroll land....

3. Cincinnati Bearcats - I know, you read the name and question why. Then remember the Bearcats return 7 starters off a team that forced 42 turnovers last year. Even if they only force 30 they are still worthy to be ranked this high.

4. Wake Forest Demon Deacons - Wake doesnt score a whole lot of points, but they damn sure dont give up many either, and they forced 35 turnovers last year to boot. The Deac's return 8 starters and are a safe bet to draft when appropriate.

5. Georgia Bulldogs - Georgia returns 7 starters off a team thats proven year in and year out it can get to the QB and force turnovers. Georgia looks to have the makings of a national title contender, and the Bulldogs D will give you steady production all year long.

6. University of South Florida Bulls - USF was a nasty defense that somehow always managed to hurt people when it counted. Theyve lost a couple of big guns, but should still be a 30 turnover team.

Honorable Mention:

Penn State Nittany Lions - The loss of Sean Lee hurts really bad, but this team should still have a decent year.

Louisiana State Tigers - They gave up an average of 19.9 ppg in 2007 and have lost studs Glenn Dorsey and Craig Steltz to graduation, but should still be a team that gets you decent sack and turnover numbers on a weekly basis.

The biggest question for LSU will be the new coordinator....Ricky Jean Francois is taking over for Mr Dorsey and is ranked as a top 3-4 DT in the country. Also, Charles Alexander will be returning next year. CA was a starter in 2007 until he went down with a knee injury in the 2nd game of the season. Chad Jones will take over for Steltz without missing a beat. And the depth is crazy deep right now.

With Appalachian St, Troy, Tulane, North Texas, Miss St, and Ole Miss on the sechedule next year, Id bet they rank in the top 3 in defense by the end of 2008. Unless losing Bo Pelini proves to be bigger than the defense.
