Big 12 Week 2 Preview

A "star" may have been born in Waco, another "cupcake" opponent humiliates Texas A&M, Howard Schnellenberger gets his foot caught in his mouth and a boot caught in his ass, and Graham Harrell throws for 500 miles. And that was just week one. A look ahead at this weeks Big 12 games:

4 - Oklahoma vs Cincinnati - 2:30 Saturday ABC
Coming off a stellar 10 win season, Cincinnati looked dominant in all phases in a 40-7 opening day win over Eastern Kentucky. Oklahoma cruised to 50-0 halftime lead and then went to sleep the rest of the night in a 57-2 laugher over the practice squad (AKA: Tennessee-Chattanooga).

Cincinnati has a killer defense, ran for over 200 yards against EKU, and mythotically built a 40-0 lead before giving up a 61 yd TD pass with mere seconds remaining. I know what your thinking, but it will not happen. One time TCU, a team very similar to the Bearcats of 2008, caught Oklahoma napping and upset them at home. Bob Stoops, though he has forgotten how to win a BCS game, has not forgotten the sting of that loss.

Oklahoma found a new #1 WR in Manual Johnson, held TC to under 15 yards on the ground, and was as deadly with the second team offense as it was with its first. Sam Bradford has not forgotten how to win, and that OU defense is as nasty a unit as you will find in the country.

Sarges Take: 4 - Oklahoma 45 - Cincinnati 13

6 - Missouri vs South East Missouri State
The Tigers are coming off a war with Illinois, which they won for the second year in a row by a 52-42 score, but will be without the services of star WR/KRET Jeremy Maclin. Chase Daniel also found a new old friend in budding star TE Chase Coffman. Missouri will use this game to fine tune a defense torched for 5 TDs by Illinois QB Juice Williams. I dont know much about SE Mizzou St except they are making a nice chunk of change for a short drive to get the shit kicked out of them. Have fun guys.

Sarges Take: 6 - Missouri 65 - SE Missouri St 6

10 - Texas @ UTEP 9:15PM Saturday ESPN2
Im going to put this as nicely as I can. The UTEP Miners suck something awful. UTEP is coming off a trip to Buffalo where they were blasted 41-17. UTEP gave up 484 total yards, including 263 on the ground and threw 3 interceptions.

The Longhorns are coming off a 52-10 spanking of the defending Sun Belt Champion Florida Atlantic Owls. Texas was more than a little angry at FAU coach Howard Schellenberger questioning their toughness. Colt McCoy played his most complete game since being knocked silly at the end of his freshman year, as Texas rolled up 503 yds, 231 coming on the ground. Fiery new DC Will Muschamp, who became so enraged after the youngest Horns secondary in years gave up a TD pass he opened a gash on his face, settled down the Horns into giving up just 53 yards in the second half.

UTEP is catching Texas at the wrong time, and look for Muschamp to make sure his defense makes an example out of an in-state opponent. Not to mention UTEP cant stop the run to save its life.

Sarges Take: 10 - Texas 66 - UTEP 14

12 - Texas Tech @ Nevada
Here is one to watch guys. Graham Harrell will throw for 500 yards and the Red Raiders will score 49 points. That is not in doubt. HOWEVER, the supposed "resurgence" of the Texas Tech Defense under Ruffin McNeil has been highly overrated. Take away the 1st QTR, and Big Sky team Eastern Washington stood toe to toe with the Red Raiders. 49-24 final. 29-24 through the last 3 QTRs. All you tortilla tossers out there should be worried. Nevada, coming off 49-13 spanking of Grambling, has the always freaky Pistol Offense, and three great fantasy players in Luke Lippencott, Marko Mitchell, and the man at the helm, QB Colin Kaepernik.

This is going to be a shoot out, and my upset special of the week.

Sarges Take: Nevada 51 - 12 - Texas Tech 49

14 - Kansas vs Louisiana Tech

Kansas whipped Florida International last week 40-10. In that game, QB Todd Reesing found his new best friend, WR Dezmon Briscoe, who hauled in 3 TD passes. Nothing to shock you in that game.

On the other side of the river, Louisiana Tech shocked Mississippi State, a bowl team from a year ago, 22-14. No upset special here. Lousiana Tech wont be beating Kansas, at home, with FGs like they did Mississippi St. Enjoy another week of high money catches by Mr. Briscoe

Sarges Take: 14 - Kansas 45 - La Tech 21

Houston @ Oklahoma State

Houston is coming off its first game of the post Art Briles era, a 55-3 pounding of Southern University. Yawn.

Across the country, Oklahoma State did something it has failed at with regularity the last decade or so. Go to a non conference BCS opponent and win. The Cowboys not only won, but did so in convincing fashion, routing Washinton State 39-13 in a game where they held the Cougs to 196 total yards. This was probably the most complete game Oklahoma State has put together in a long time, and they will not fear this weeks "Cougs" aerial assault one bit. Expect some scoring, and expect T Boone Pickens boys to move to 2-0 and start trying to knock on the door of the Top 25.

Sarges Take: Oklahoma State 45 - Houston 30

Texas A&M @ New Mexico
"Mike Sherman will make all the difference". "Mike Goodson is the breakout TB of the year". "A&M will open the Mike Sherman era with a clinic against Arky St". All of you heard these things, and all of them were wrong.

In short, Sun Belt lightweight Arkansas State went into Kyle Field and wrecked the Aggies in an 18-14 upset. Make no mistake, this weeks game is a critical one for Texas A&M, coming off a catastrophic home loss. Expect to see Aggie Soph QB Jerrod Johnson in this game supplanting Steven McGee. Rocky Long's squad...boy does this sound weird...is not as tough as Arkansas State, and is coming off a 26-3 thumping by TCU. I expect Texas A&M to get back on track this weekend.

Sarges Take: Texas A&M 24 - New Mexico 6

San Jose St @ Nebraska

The Bo Pelini era opened with a 47-24 home win over Western Michigan. Nebraska led 34-10 at halftime, and though much improvement needs to be made on defense, the Nebraska Offense looked crisp under Joe Ganz. San Jose St on the other hand got bushwacked in the 1st QTR by UC Davis and clawed back for a 13-10 win after Dick Tomey wised up and inserted Kyle Reed at QB. Bottomline, when your scrapping and fighting for a 13-10 win over UC Davis, your going to get your ass kicked in Nebraska. All that matters is how bad. The Sarge is willing to bet its gonna be really bad. Another awesome week ahead for Joe Ganz owners.

Sarges Take:
Nebraska 56 - SJSU 7

Montana State @ Kansas State

Kansas State is coming off a 45-6 demolition of North Texas and its spread offense. Montana State crushed Adams State 59-3. Montana State (my God is this sad) has a winnable game against Minnesota of the Big Ten next week. This game is not winnable. Expect horrible things to happen to the visitors in this affair.

Sarges Take: Kansas State 42 - Montana State 17

Eastern Washington @ Colorado

Colorado looked pretty darn good in its opening day 38-17 win over rival Colorado State at Invesco. The Buffs return home to take on Eastern Washington, who if you've been reading hung tough with Texas Tech last week. Colorado has a superior defense to Texas Tech, and I dont see much hanging around this week. Kudos to Eastern Washington for being fearless with the scheduling. Expect a Darrell Scott clinic and a 42-7 half time lead in this one.

Sarges Take: Colorado 52 - Eastern Washington 28

Kent State @ Iowa State
Iowa State comes off its best stat game of the Chizik era, a 44-17 win over South Dakota State. Kent State comes into Cyclone Country on the heels of 21-0 loss to Boston College. Kent State is better than 21-0 and Iowa State isnt as good as 44-17. Kent State faired well against BC, but turnovers killed them as they always will. This game is going to come down to the Iowa State offensive line versus the Kent State defense. If Iowa State can free up Austen Arnaud again, they stand a good chance of beating Kent St. If Iowa State has trouble with the Kent D, and Kent State RB Eugene Jarvis gets loose...well..you know the score. This is a game thats too close to call IMO, but Ive got to make a pick. Mark my words, this game is going to come down to someone's screw up....or who screws up last.

Sarges Take: Kent State 21 - Iowa State 20

Northwestern St @ Baylor
I saved the best for last. Go ahead..I'll wait while you get the towel to clean your drink off the computer screen. Moving on:

The Art Briles era at Baylor opened on sour note, as Riley Skinner broke both of his feet off in the Bears ass in a 41-13 pounding. Baylor did learn what Miami already knew, that you cant count on Kirby Freeman. They also learned that Robert Griffin, though young, is the best QB on their roster and has earned his chance to play. Baylor is never going to win the Big 12, but Baylor may finally be on the way to contending for bowl births every year. Robert Griffin should get his chance to put on a showcase against Northwestern State, and fantasy owners in college "dynasty" leagues who dont already own him need to take notice.

Sarges Take: Baylor 45 - Northwestern St - 17

Thats my spin around the Big 12. See you next week.

For all that this was prophetic, it was also far worse than you imagined DB. Get this, K-State's first score came from their own one because of a bad snap to the punter, which resulted in a punt out of bounds and a penalty. K-State also had two blocked punts returned for TDs. By the time the first quarter was over K-State was up 31-7.
