The ACC - Week 5 Preview

Sports Outlaw
ACC Week 5
1.5

Perhaps the most impressive performance in the ACC, maybe all of the NCAA, was North Carolina State’s showing against Eastern Carolina. The Pirates have been the 2008 Cinderella story of college football defeating top draw teams like Virginia Tech and West Virginia but, alas, their glorious run came to an end at Carter-Finley Stadium in over time.

This week the Wolfpack will challenge another high ranked team in the University of South Florida Bulls. The Bulls are lead by an extremely capable quarterback in junior Matt Grothe. Grothe, on the season, has thrown for 916 yards and 7 touchdowns and will certainly look to test the N.C. State secondary all game long. However, the Wolfpack may have an answer for the damage that Grothe may due with team leading rusher, Andre Brown, who has averaged 4.4 yards per carry thus far. And while both teams are coming off of a victory, one has to think that the momentum is, without question, on the side of the home team and if North Carolina State can indeed defeat the Bulls, they will have pulled off the feat that Eastern Carolina did in defeating two top-25 ranked teams back to back.

Another matchup to keep an eye on is that of UNC and the Hurricanes. Miami’s QB Robert Marve threw his first touchdowns of the season last week and will certainly be looking to add to it while Tarheels QB, T.J. Yates, may have a tough time adding to his impressive 2008 campaign of 623 yards and 6 touchdowns against a good Canes’ secondary.

Elsewhere in the ACC, teams like Boston College and Wake Forest should have no problem defeating their opponents of Rhode Island and Navy, respectively.

Meanwhile Florida State will have yet another challenging week as they take on the Colorado Buffaloes. Colorado quarterback has shown a good arm in the start of the season leading the Buffaloes to a 3-0 record while runningback Rodney Stewart, though unable to find the endzone, has certainly provided the offense with a more than believable play action. And while the Seminoles will certainly bounce back from last week’s defeat against the Demon Deacons, don’t count on it to be this week.

College football fans should also keep a close watch on the noon matchup of Maryland and 20th ranked Clemson. Both teams aerial attack has been suspect with Terps QB Chris Turner throwing 5 interceptions to match his 5 touchdowns and Tigers QB Cullen Harper having turned the ball of 4 times. Yet it is not the passing game that either team will be focused on. Maryland’s Da’Rel Scott has ran for 407 yards and 3 touchdowns while Clemson’s two-headed monster of James Davis and C.J. Spiller have combined for 455 yards and 8 touchdowns.

The ACC certainly promises to continue the excitement in week 5. Guys, you don’t want to miss these games.
