NFL News And Rumors: Playoffs/ Conference Championships

Here we are, another week of News and Rumors. I had thought the the News and Rumors thread would suffer from shrinkage when the regular season ended. Instead it swelled up to amazing proportions. This is, of course, a result of all the contributions to the thread by our fellow Sports
Outlaw posters. I would like to express my thanks on behalf of this forearm to everybody who stopped by last week.

gmrcharity: again put in an amazing news production performance from his overseas outpost.

var8rfan: Was really on top of the news himself. All the injury updates he adds to the Game Threads have been a very nice addition.

Remote Controller:

Arctic Dawgs:

Orgazmo: dove into the newsthread

Da_Bomb:

Phicinfan:

Nicholete:

Eaglechick:

Cerberus:

Ram??

Thanks, everyone!

NFL sources tell the Dallas Morning News that Cowboys OC Jason Garrett is the "primary target" of Baltimore's head coaching search.

With Dallas out of the playoff race, Garrett and Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano are free to join other clubs as long as they make upward movement. Things will heat up early this week. Garrett has already interviewed for the head coaching vacancies in Atlanta and Baltimore.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reiterated that Wade Phillips will remain his head coach next season.

He will be on the hot seat, though, if the Cowboys stumble at any point. Now that Dallas has lost, assistants Tony Sparano and Jason Garrett could move on to head coaching jobs.

if dallas had made it to the super bowl, they probably would have been able to protect most of their coaching staff. instead i would guess that people will be going all over the place now. some to miami, garret moving on or up, etc. yesterdays game will have a big rollover effect

Antonio Gates will see a toe specialist Monday before determining whether he'll be able to play in any more postseason games.

The San Diego Union-Tribune calls the knee injury Philip Rivers suffered Sunday a "sprain."

Rivers said he could have re-entered after a series or two, but didn't want to break up Billy Volek's momentum. He fully anticipates facing New England.

Chargers coach Norv Turner labeled LaDainian Tomlinson (bruised left knee) "questionable" for the AFC Championship after Sunday's game.

Tomlinson told reporters that he could've come in for the second half Sunday had the Chargers fallen behind.

Giants CB Aaron Ross' shoulder was dislocated Sunday.

Ross was playing very well before the injury, which caused him to don a sling and was originally called a sprain. "It kept popping out," Ross revealed. He says he'll be ready for the Packers, but that may be difficult.

Jonathan Ogden says he would not want to play for the Ravens if Marty Schottenheimer is hired as Brian Billick's replacement.

He acknowledges Schottenheimer would "probably" be the best fit of all the candidates for Baltimore, but pointed out that Marty "had Bruce Smith doing the Oklahoma drill when he was with the Redskins." Ogden's decision to retire or return will likely be influenced heavily by who the Ravens hire.

Looks like Marty may be in Baltimore

Jaguars :: WR

WR Wilford Ready To Leave Jaguars

Alan Schmadtke, Orlando Sentinel - [Full Article]

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Ernest Wilford was the only player to pull his name tag off his locker after a season-ending meeting. Because he wasn't offered a long-term contact before the end of his current deal, he said he doubts he'll be back.

The Seattle Post-Intellinger reports Seahawks WR Deion Branch needs surgery to repair ligament damage in his knee and is in search of a second opinion.

I think we had this in last weeks post but I think this is important enough to repeat. It sounds like he tore his ACL in the last game. Surgery could make him miss most of training camp as well as make him a little cautious early in the season.

to update this:
OC Jason Garrett will be making a second interview with both the Falcons and the Ravens. Rex Ryan is also doing a second interview with the Falcons and is probably the front runner for the Falcons job.

Cowboys FB Oliver Hoyte will not need offseason surgery to correct nerve damage in his biceps and rotator cuff. Hoyte sprained his neck early in 2007 and wound up playing through it during the second half of the season. An MRI determined that his condition had not worsened. Hoyte will likely stay on as Dallas' main lead blocker in 2008.

Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart has declared for the 2008 NFL Draft and should be one of the early backs taken in the draft so he bears watching.

I mentioned Stewart here as he is likely to be a top RB in the draft.

There are a huge amount of Juniors declaring for the draft right now. I would like to thank.......

Arctic Dawgs!!!

Dawgs has been working very hard to track all these underclassmen and doing an incredible job.

An Update: Antonio Gates didn't appear to suffer any setback from playing Sunday. He will not practice at all this week and be evaluated just before Gametime. Game Time Decision but it sounds like he will probably be a go.
