The South Florida Sun-Sentinel believes the Dolphins will cut MLB Zach Thomas this offseason. Thomas would seemingly be a nice fit on the inside if the 'Fins go with more of a full fledged 3-4 under Bill Parcells, but The Tuna prefers bigger players and Thomas is only 5'11/228. He'll be a hot commodity if he's released.

seems very rumorish.

While we here at SO scrutinized Titans TE Ben Troupe a little closer when Bo Scaife went down he is someone to watch in the offseason. Ben is an unresticted free agent and could be headed for greener pastures next year.

Jaguars DT John Henderson injured his hamstring in Saturday's Wild Card win over the Steelers and could miss this weeks game vs the Pats. Henderson was initially carted off, but returned a series later before eventually exiting for good. He was replaced by Grady Jackson and finished with one tackle.

It is sounding like Redskins RB Clinton Portis will be restructuring his contract in the offseason. His cap number under the current contract more than doubles next year.

49 ers QB Shaun Hillwho looked good in his late season relief effort at QB will probably sign a new contract. Expect something along the line of a 3 year deal worth $12-15 million. Nice boost for a guy who spent 6 seasons on the bench at league minimum.

It is sounding like Steelers WR Hines Ward may have his knee scoped in the offseason. It could make him more reliable health wise next year if nothing major shows up.

Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, citing league sources, reports the Washington Redskins are currently about $20 million over the cap for the 2008 season and will need to restructure the contracts of some players in order to be under the cap.

Bears and Dolphins are way under, this is the other side of the cap coin. Restructuring Portis wil help but QB Todd Collins is an unrestricted Free Agent and can't be signed because of it. You might see some surprising names being allowed to walk.

Think I saw Adam Schefter on NFL Network say that Martz has been hired by the 49ers. Looking for confirmation

eta: yup

ESPN - Former Lions coordinator Martz hired to run 49ers offense - NFL

Quote:
Despite some initial resistance from ownership, San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan has hired Mike Martz as his offensive coordinator, according to his agent, Bob LaMont.

Martz, offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions for the past two years, agreed to a two-year deal with the 49ers.
Doesn't sound like everyone is on board for it though

He is on thin ice this year

Broncos Jim Bates gone

Quote:
Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and defensive coordinator Jim Bates came to a mutual agreement to part ways Tuesday.

Bates, who was a head coach candidate when he was with the Green Bay Packers, was hired last year to turn around the Broncos defense. The team went backward instead of forward. Bates and Shanahan met Monday and came to a resolution late Monday night.

The Broncos signed Bates to a three-year, $3.9 million contract last year.

"I'm very thankful for the opportunity and very saddened that things did not work out," Bates said in statement. "I had the opportunity to stay, Mike has been very fair with me, and the final decision, for the Broncos and for me, was to step aside."

John Clayton, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame writers' wing, is a senior writer for ESPN.com.

No where to go but up. Any decent candidates out there?

Dom Capers is the only real name out there now. Denver has at least moved early so they can grab someone quickly when they go on the market. We will probably see 5-7 DCs move around this offseason. A lot of that just stems from having one vacancy that gets filled with another teams DC which creates another vacancy. It may take awhile for the DC shuffle to play out as there are coaching vacancies. Usually, coaching vacancies come first as you don't want to hire a DC that a new coach doesn't want. This can still vary a lot, if a DC gets a coaching position then more vacancies, more shuffle. Denver has a stable coaching situation so they can jump in at any time.
