NFL News And Rumors: Week 4

Texans DT Killings Suffers Neck Injury

Houston Texans defensive tackle Cedric Killings left the field on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital on Sunday after a headfirst collision with Indianapolis receiver Roy Hall. The 6-foot-3, 310-pound Killings, playing special teams, hit Hall on a block as Jerome Mathis was returning a kickoff in the second quarter. The Texans said Killings suffered a neck injury, but had feeling in his extremities.

Bears D Banged Up In Bout With Cowboys

Chicago Bears Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs and cornerback Nathan Vasher left with groin injuries, while an ankle injury knocked offensive lineman Ruben Brown out of Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. The Bears had already lost Briggs and Vasher when Brown, a nine-time Pro Bowl pick, got hurt in the fourth quarter.

We will have to see how bad these injuries turn out to be. The Bears have already lost a couple of starters this year. These sound like shorter term injuries but if they are all out next week it could have a significant impact on that performance.

49ers TE Vernon Davis Sprains His Knee, MRI On The Way

49ers TE Vernon Davis suffered a sprained right knee in Sunday's 37-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. 49ers coach Mike Nolan confirmed the injury after the game and said Davis will undergo an MRI exam on Monday.

Week 3 Injury Roundup

Houston Texans defensive tackle Cedric Killings left the field on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital Sunday after a headfirst collision with Indianapolis Colts receiver Roy Hall.
The Texans said Killings suffered a neck injury but had feeling in his extremities.

The injury occurred on a kickoff return, when the 6-foot-3, 310-pound Killings hit Hall on a block as Jerome Mathis was running back a second-quarter kick during the 30-24 loss. Hall and Killings went down together and Hall walked slowly off the field with trainers helping him. Colts coach Tony Dungy said Hall suffered a shoulder injury.
Killings lay motionless as trainers attended to him and a stretcher was wheeled onto the field.
Houston coach Gary Kubiak said Killings had a deep cut under his right eye. He was moving his arms and legs and speaking as he was being treated on the field, Kubiak said.
"Initially, he made a couple of comments that he couldn't feel down low," Kubiak said. "As he laid there and talked to us, he did move everything."
The sight of a motionless player is a frightening one this season, after Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett suffered a life-threatening spinal cord injury in the opener. Doctors initially feared Everett would remain paralyzed, but now they're optimistic he will walk again.
Early in the second quarter Sunday, Houston running back Ahman Green left with a left knee sprain. Green caught a short pass and was tackled after a 9-yard gain by Colts safety Bob Sanders.
Houston rookie Jacoby Jones left in the third quarter after separating his left shoulder on a 74-yard punt return. Jones is the Texans' leading kick returner and started for the first time Sunday in place of wide receiver Andre Johnson, who injured his left knee last week. Houston center Steve McKinney left with a sprained knee in the fourth quarter.
Buffalo quarterback J.P. Losman sprained his left knee on the first play of the Bills' 38-7 loss to the Patriots. Coach Dick Jauron said he expects Losman to miss a couple of weeks.
Losman stayed in for two more plays after the roughing-the-passer penalty against Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork. His day ended 65 seconds into the game when Ellis Hobbs sacked him and stripped the ball.
Losman returned to the bench, threw some warmup passes and offered to return, but Trent Edwards finished up.
"It was getting worse and worse by the seconds," Losman said. "I could stand the pain, but I couldn't deal with the weakness."
The Bills got a scare -- and lost another starter -- when linebacker Paul Posluszny was injured early in the second quarter and remained on the field for about 10 minutes. Players from both teams watched intently as a golf cart was brought onto the field, but Posluszny climbed in on his own.
Posluszny has a broken left forearm and is scheduled for surgery on Monday for what may be a season-ending injury, Jauron said.
Eagles running back Brian Westbrook bruised his ribs in Philadelphia's 56-21 win over Detroit and will undergo more tests Monday.
Westbrook was taken to the locker room in the third quarter after he was hurt on a 5-yard run. Eagles coach Andy Reid said X-rays were negative and Westbrook would have a CT scan on Monday. Westbrook said he would be fine.
Six-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins (neck) and two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard (knee) sat out for the Eagles.
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward bruised a leg bone while absorbing a hard hit from 49ers safety Mark Roman in the third quarter and left the 37-16 win. The four-time Pro Bowl receiver had one catch for 2 yards and a 7-yard run.
San Francisco running back Frank Gore, who missed most of the preseason with a broken right hand, had precautionary X-rays on his hand that were negative after being held to 39 yards.
Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme left the Panthers' 27-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons with a right elbow injury, which he doesn't believe is serious. Delhomme began shaking his arm and motioning toward the sideline after he delivered a short pass to Brad Hoover late in the third quarter.
The injury occurred on Carolina's previous possession, when Delhomme was sacked by John Abraham.
Miami Dolphins middle linebacker Zach Thomas was inactive for their 31-28 loss to the New York Jets after tests revealed earlier in the week he has a mild concussion.
Minnesota quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, who sustained a groin injury last week in overtime against Detroit, did not start after coach Brad Childress tried to keep his plans secret all week. Kelly Holcomb replaced him for the 13-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Daunte Culpepper took over for Josh McCown (sore left foot) at quarterback to start the second half in the Oakland Raiders' 26-24 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Ravens quarterback Steve McNair returned after missing last week's game due to a groin injury, but coach Brian Billick took him out because he thought he was favoring it in Baltimore's 26-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Chicago Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs left the Bears' game against the Dallas Cowboys with a groin injury.
Briggs appeared to hurt himself midway through the second quarter, when Brian Urlacher sacked Tony Romo. Briggs, who was trying to avoid Urlacher, stayed in the game but did not come out for the second half.
Also injured Sunday were: Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo (foot), Denver quarterback Jay Cutler (mild ankle sprain), Detroit receiver Calvin Johnson (bruised lower back), Cincinnati running back Rudi Johnson (hamstring), Denver safety John Lynch (strained groin), Cincinnati linebacker Anthony Schlegel (back), Buffalo kick returner Josh Scobey (knee), St. Louis offensive guard Mark Setterstrom (knee), Denver fullback Paul Smith (neck), Jacksonville running back Fred Taylor (bruised leg), Eagles left tackle William Thomas (mild knee strain) and Buffalo offensive lineman Jason Whittle (hamstring).

Eagles RB WestBrook Has Abdominal Strain

Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook has an abdominal strain and his availability for Sunday's game against the New York Giants will be determined later this week. "We'll know better in the next day or two," coach Andy Reid said. "Right now he's pretty sore."

This was earlier reported as a rib injury. Westys' knee has already been limiting his practice time. Doesn't sound like much practice this week as well as a Game Time Decision coming.

Spin: More as we know it, but this news should make his backup, Brian Leonard, a hot pickup this week."

Losman Out At Least 2 Weeks: Bills Sign Nall

Down to just one healthy quarterback, and with injured starter J.P. Losman expected to miss at least two weeks with a sprained left knee, the Buffalo Bills on Monday re-signed veteran free agent Craig Nall, who the team had released at the end of the preseason.
Nall, 28, will serve as the backup to rookie Trent Edwards, who replaced Losman in the first quarter of Sunday's 38-7 loss to New England, and who will make his first regular-season start next Sunday when the Bills host the New York Jets.

Pather QB Delhomme Won't Need Surgery, LB Morgan Iffy

With both arms flailing and nothing protecting his strained right elbow, Delhomme was happy after an MRI determined he won't need surgery. But Delhomme was unsure if he or backup David Carr will start on Sunday against Tampa Bay.
"I'll be getting a ton of treatment on it and we'll go from there," Delhomme said. "I've never had anything like this before, so how long it's going to last, I don't know. I usually do OK with treatment and I think my body heals pretty fast."

The Panthers are also concerned about linebacker Dan Morgan, who had shoulder, hamstring and heel injuries in Carolina's 27-20 win over Atlanta. A team spokesman said tests Monday revealed Morgan has tendinitis in his lower leg, and said his status for the Tampa Bay game is also uncertain.

Fresh X-Rays Reveal That Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander Has A Cracked Wrist

Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander has a cracked bone in his left wrist, but will continue to play with a protective cast, coach Mike Holmgren said Monday.

Alexander has been playing with a protective cast on his wrist since spraining it in the team's opener Sept. 9 against Tampa Bay, a victory.
Holmgren did not say Monday when the bone was cracked, but said "extra pictures" of the wrist were taken after Alexander came out of Sunday's game in the first half in Seattle, a victory over Cincinnati.

Alexander rushed for 100 yards on 21 carries against the Bengals.
Holmgren said it wouldn't make any difference in the time it takes for Alexander's wrist to heal if he continued to play or didn't. He said it would take a few weeks for the bone to heal.
The Seahawks are off to a 2-1 start this season.

Broncos QB Cutler and Safety Lynch Sent For MRIs

The Denver Broncos sent safety John Lynch and quarterback Jay Cutler for MRIs on Monday. Lynch has a strained groin and Cutler a sprained ankle. Lynch's injury appeared more serious, although coach Mike Shanahan didn't want to reveal much.
"He's having an MRI and we should find out later on today," Shanahan said.
Cutler didn't meet with the media following Denver's 23-14 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday because he was getting treatment for what the team termed a "mild ankle sprain."
He was also sent for further medical tests Monday.
"They wouldn't be having MRIs if they didn't think it was serious," Shanahan said.
Lynch left the game in the first quarter and didn't return, leading Shanahan to suggest the perennial Pro Bowler must really have been hurting. Lynch also was unavailable after the game.
Cutler sprained an ankle when he was sacked in the waning minutes by Reggie Hayward but stayed in the game for the rest of that series and the next one, which ended with him throwing an interception that sealed Denver's defeat.
