Rams RB Steven Jackson participates in practice

Oct 17 St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson (groin) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 17, but he is doubtful for the team's Week 7 game. Coach Scott Linehan said he had an "outside chance'' of playing this week at Seattle.

Maroney reportedly ran well in a limited practice Wednesday, but isn't quite ready to suit up for contact.

The AP doesn't usually break major news like this, but it appears Kevin Faulk has a good chance to start in a favorable matchup, with FBs Kyle Eckel and Heath Evans also in the mix for carries. Oct. 17 - 9:08 pm et

Harrington voices his disappointment

Quote:
Flowery Branch — A day after being replaced as the Falcons starting quarterback in favor of Byron Leftwich, Joey Harrington spoke his mind. He's hurt. He doesn't think he deserved to be benched. He could care less if he's viewed as a player who can't cut it as a starter in the NFL.

"Is it tough? Yeah. It's awful," Harrington said Thursday. "It's terrible. Every week I sit here and I pour every ounce of effort I have into this team. And to be sitting here at 1-5 and to be replaced is a difficult thing to deal with. But it's something I've dealt with before.

Nolan Names Dilfer as Sunday's Starter

Quote:
After saying on Wednesday that it would be day to day in terms of Alex Smith’s availability for Sunday’s game, head coach Mike Nolan went ahead and named Trent Dilfer as the starting quarterback following Thursday’s practice.

“Trent will start this week against the Giants,” said Nolan. “He has taken most of the reps over the last two days of practice, so he gives us the best chance to win.”

Getting interesting:
Pats RB Maroney still in question for Miami game | The Journal Gazette

Quote:
Even though the New England Patriots are running short of running backs, Laurence Maroney says he won't jeopardize his own health to return to the lineup.
"You've still got to know your body and know your injury," Maroney said. "Just because another person went down doesn't mean that you have to speed your (rehab) up and then hurt yourself more. Now the two of you are out for even longer instead of being patient.
"I'm still going to be patient and whatever (Coach Bill) Belichick and the trainers have for me this week is what they have."

Tank Johnson Cleared To Practice

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell notified suspended defensive tackle Tank Johnson on Thursday that he can begin practicing with the Dallas Cowboys immediately, but that his eight-game suspension would not be reduced, the NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported.

Surprising move here, the commish shows a little compassion toward the player, not reducing his suspension, but at least allowing him to practice with the team. Great news for Dallas, allowing them to better prepare for a playoff run.

Last night, the Associated Press ran a story about the Patriots running game that included the following line:

Maroney, who gained 252 yards on 54 carries in the first three games, ran well in practice Wednesday but took some plays off and won't play Sunday against winless Miami.

We put a story up about it quickly, but a few things didn't seem right.

1. This should have been the lede of the article. It was buried in the sixth paragraph as a throw-away line. We've found this sort of thing often indicates a mistake.

2. All Boston outlets have indicated that Maroney has improved steadily over the last few weeks and has a good chance of playing this week. At the very least, he'll be a game-time decision unless the AP had somehow cracked the Belichick fortress with some super scoop.

Anyhow, we kept looking and found this edited AP article posted on the Boston Herald, with this quote.

"(Morris) won’t play Sunday against winless Miami, but Maroney is likely to return."

We edited our post, including what we knew, but a few fantasy sites (which make sure to check Rotoworld as policy), too the original story and ran with it.

Some writer or editor made a major mistake somewhere, but the second version makes a lot more sense. Recently, NFL.com has re-posted the story saying Maroney is out and some readers have let us know about it.

I suspect the version from the Herald, not the one on NFL.com, is the correct one. In the end, we won't really know until Sunday morning. Just like the Patriots want.

Update: I emailed Adam Schefter from NFL Network. Despite the reports to the contrary, he confirms that Maroney is far from ruled out of this game. It was a misunderstanding related to the AP article.

Update2: Realizing their error, the AP issued another Maroney update Thursday. He said he won't force things just because Sammy Morris is out, but his status is up in the air.

49ers Hoping Alex Smith would be ready to start

Trent Dilfer will start at quarterback for the 49ers again this week.
A big disappointment for the 49ers and Frank Gore in particular. The team was hoping Alex Smith would come back and rally the team after its Week 6 bye, but that's not going to happen. Smith could only put in a limited practice Thursday and the Niners will again turn to Dilfer. Upgrade the Giants' defense and don't consider using any 49ers wideouts. It's uncertain now when Smith (shoulder) will return to game action. Oct. 18 - 5:45 pm et

Rams RB Steven Jackson is Out for week 7. Sjax will miss yet another week with his groin injury.
Bengals RB Rudi Johnsons hamstring problems continue to plague him still. It had looked last week like he may have turned the corner to recovery but this week he missed Fridays practice and is considered Doubtful.
Jets WR Laveranues Coles was limited in practice Friday. He has been hampered by a calf injury for quite awhile. He is listed as Questionable and will likely play this week. A Healthy Cotchery should be considered a strong start.
Eagles WR Reggie Brown will play this week after practicing fully Friday despite his finger injury
Eagles TE LJ Smith is up and down as usual. One week he practices and the Eagles get all excited about his playing the next week he doesn't practice at all. This week is one of the latter weeks where he isn't practicing at all. He is listed as doubtful and is Out. In bigger leagues people may still be hanging on to this guy, hoping he does something.
Falcons TE Alge Crumpler on the other hand will be playing this week despite knee and ankle problems that limited him in Fridays practice.

xenophobe, at FFT, is reporting that Jacobs is doubtful. He has no link, but the few of you that know him realize that NYG info doesn't get anymore reliable then from him. I am a multiple jacobs owner, and will take head. This is info from xeno, and there is no link, so just be aware!

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Gerard Warren and linebacker Sam Williams will miss Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs with injuries.

Warren, who leads the team with three sacks, will miss his second straight game with an injured quadriceps. Warren hurt himself in practice on Oct. 4 and has been sidelined ever since.

Williams hurt his shoulder on Sept. 30 against the Miami Dolphins and has been limited in practice ever since. He also missed last week's game in San Diego.

Warren Sapp, the team's other starting defensive tackle, was listed as probable with an ankle injury. He had missed practice the previous two days.

Dolphins Put QB Trent Green On IR

Trent Green's decision about whether or not he should play again this season has been made for him.
The Miami Dolphins have placed Green on the injured reserve list, ending his 2007 season. Green had undergone tests this week and last week to determine the extent of damage done by his second major concussion in as many seasons. His latest was deemed a Grade 3 concussion after his head collided with the knee of Houston Texans defensive tackle Travis Johnson.

Jets TE Chris Barker Won't Play This Week.

Jets tight end Chris Baker won't play in New York's game at Cincinnati after he was downgraded Saturday from questionable to out with a back injury. Baker, who has 12 catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns, was limited in practice all week and didn't accompany the team to Cincinnati. It was unclear when Baker was hurt, and it's against the Jets' policy to discuss injuries.
