Starting QB undecided in Oakland

Inside Bay Area > Inside The Oakland Raiders > Culpepper vs. McCown: Now what?

Not that anybody is likely to start these two anyways. I still believe that JaMarcus Russell's first start in the NFL is right around the corner...Kiffin really likes this kid and he has looked good in practice.

– Regarding JaMarcus Russell, Kiffin said, "Whenever that situation comes along when he's ready to play and he can help us win, we'll put him in."

Jerry Porter hurt his shoulder on his 59-yard reception Sunday, but went back in the game. Kiffin said he doesn't anticipate it being a problem this week.

– Kiffin is hopeful Gerard Warren can return to action this week to give the Raiders an additional pass rush threat. Although he didn't have a sack, Derrick Burgess applied constant pressure Sunday, and that in turn helped free up Warren Sapp, who had one sack and could have had two more.

Chargers may play in Arizona this week

Chargers Leave S. Calif. Fires for Ariz.

I grew up and lived in Northern California before I moved to Virignia 2 years ago. Every year there are wildfires in Northern and Southern Cal and every year many homes burn to the ground, but what matters most is a very high percentage of people survive these fires and are able to rebuild. More civilians survive these fires than do firefighters. Next time you have a chance, shake a firefighters hand and say Thank You.

  • Bucs drop RB Zack Crockett from the team.
  • Texans drop RB Samkon Gado from the team move RB Adimchinobe Echemandu up from practice squad.
  • RB Maurice Jones-Drew sprained his knee in last weeks game. He may miss practice or be in practice lite mode but The Jags are expecting to be available for Week 8, at this point, we will watch.
  • Falcons cut DL Grady Jackson This as caused some grumblings in the locked room.
  • Browns CB Gary Baxter was placed on Injured Reserve
  • Lions have waived CB Ramzee Robinson.
  • Cowboys LB Greg Ellis is completely recovered and starting at LB, in case you hadn't noticed.
  • Dolphins LB Zack Thomas got into a car accident last Sunday and may have reconcussed (?) himself and it sounds like he may not make the flight to England.

I may have missed it, but ESPN is reporting that Trent Edwards is now the starter period in Buffalo, moving J.P. Losman to back up permanently.

Jets LB Vilma May Have A Significant Knee Injury

The losses keep piling up for the New York Jets. The Daily News reported on Wednesday that Jets linebacker Vilma suffered a "significant" knee injury and could be out for the remainder of the season.
Vilma was removed for part of Sunday's 38-31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals because of the injury, coach Eric Mangini said. It was the team's fourth straight defeat.

Sounds like Vilma continued to play despite the injury and was pulled because the injury hampered him too much.

Panther RB Nick Goings to IP, LB Curry Signed

The Carolina Panthers placed reserve running back and kick returner Nick Goings on injured reserve Wednesday, nearly a month after he sustained at least the third concussion of his career. The Panthers signed linebacker Donte Curry to replace him on the 53-man roster.
Goings was injured on a kickoff return against Tampa Bay on Sept. 30. He did not play in Carolina's past two games, and coach John Fox said Goings had not been cleared by doctors to return to practice.
Curry, a seven-year veteran, was released by Detroit last week. He'll provide depth at linebacker with Dan Morgan out indefinitely with a partially torn Achilles tendon.

Browns CB Baxter To IR, Sorensen Signed

With cornerback Gary Baxter out for the season, the Cleveland Browns signed defensive back Nick Sorensen, a six-year veteran most recently with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Baxter was placed on injured reserve Monday, ending his comeback from two torn patellar tendons, freak injuries sustained on the same play against Denver last season. He had made progress but not enough to help the Browns this season.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Sorensen signed with Miami as an undrafted free agent in 2001. He has played in 75 career games, mostly on special teams, with St. Louis and Jacksonville.

Packer RB Deshawn Wynn Practices Thursday And Is Named Starter

By working his way through a neck muscle injury and returning to practice on Thursday, rookie DeShawn Wynn remained the Green Bay Packers' starting running back. For the moment, anyway.
"He's in the No. 1 slot right now," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "He has an opportunity to take it and do something with it. We'll see what he can do.

Whiplash sidelines Zach Thomas

Whiplash sidelines Thomas for Dolphins' game in London

Thomas and his wife were leaving the Dolphins' 49-28 loss to the New England Patriots last weekend when their vehicle was hit on Florida's Turnpike. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Thomas and his wife were rear-ended in stop-and-go traffic by a driver wearing Patriots attire. Thomas was wearing a seat belt.

Great news for me as a B. Jacobs owner.

It shocks me that his aunt didn't mention this yesterday! We talked about another concussion that he had suffered in the game. He was most likely going to sit it out anyway. Zach has had a rough year.

Jags RB Maurice Jones-Drew This will be a little long-winded for a gameday brief. MJD started out as a bit of a dud this year but is performing very well lately. In last weeks game he suffered a slight Knee sprain. He is listed as questionable which is considered 50/50. So far he has missed Wednesday practice. He was limited on Thursdays and reports on what level he participated in Fridays practice varies. The Jags and Drew have insisted all week long that he would play and that is my gut opinion but it would be best if you check first. But also realize that MJD is a burst of speed on the edge kinda guy and may not be as effective against a quick Bucs D.
Bengals RB Rudi Johnson is listed as doubtful but hasn't done more than light drills before practice all week. should reguard him as Out as far as setting your lineups are concerned. Which means we will see.....
Bengals RB Kenny Watson will be starting in Rudi Johnsons absence again. Watson had a spectacular game last week. This week against the Steeler D Kenny probably won't appear so spectacular. See that Ram! I'm sticking up for your D.

John Clayton is reporting that Culpepper will be under center for this weeks game against the Titans. McCown is healthy enough and will back-up Culpepper.

Texans QBs are a potential land mine this week. QB Matt Schaub was banged up in last weeks game injuring everything? They were talking hip, ankle, back and thigh early in the week now we are down to just his hip and ankle. His hip was just said to be badly bruised after testing. Schaub was limited in practice Thursday and Matt and Sage were splitting reps earlier in the week but Rosenfels has an edge in that category. Friday Schaub practiced fully and was listed as probable. But the coach has said that Schaub is a Game Day Decsion despite these positive signs so we may see....
QB Sage Rosenfels had a remarkable garbage time performance last week almost pulling out a win in the process. Sage may get the start or at least see some time ths week. Schaub will be dressed out and active and will be checked out to see if he can start. before the game. Mat has proven to be the real deal and with him banged up the Texans may be more interested in seeing how much potential Sage actually has. Of coursr, stating either one is risky at this point. Another Texan
RB Ahman Green practiced fully Friday and should be out on the field starting this week. But he may not be the most exciting fantasy prospect vs the chargers.
