Vernon Gholston - Draft Projection - NFL Impact

Vernon Gholston

Defensive End - Ohio State
  • Height - 6'4"
  • Weight - 264
  • 40 Time - 4.67
2007 Stats:
  • 37 Tackles
  • 15.5 Tackles for loss
  • 14 Sacks
Draft Projection - 1st Round

NFL Impact
Gholston is an exciting pass rusher who is electric off the edge. May project best as a 3-4 OLB at the NFL level. He has a ton of upside and has room to improve. Gets lost against larger blockers at times and may be a liability against the run early in his pro career. His speed off the edge will make him a possible top 10 pick. The biggest concern here was his tendency to disappear for large stretches at times.

Gholston bench pressed 225 37 times. Good number for his size.

Followed it up with an impressive 4.64 40. Good day for Gholston.

I have been looking at him as a potential draft prospect for the Raiders. As an Ohio State fan you have seen him play multiple times, what is your opinion of him Miller? Can he play DE and be effective at the NFL level? Do you think he can become an effective run-stopper?

I think he's going to fit best in a 3-4 to be honest. He could play 403 DE, but I think you would see him do what he did often at OSU, he'll disappear for long stretches of time. He is an interesting prospect due to ability to take over games at times, but he's not consistent. I think if you stand him up, he can develop into a DeMarcus Ware type OLB.

Hmmmm..........Im not so sold on this guy for what you folks stated above, the long periods where he disappears.

The strength and speed though are impressive. I like the LB idea above

Vernon Gholston's stock is soaring. How high? Precisely 42 inches.

Representatives from nearly every NFL team battled a snowstorm to view Ohio State's pro day, and the estimated 50 scouts in attendance were quickly distracted from the cold weather outside. If they had not been staggered by Gholston's speed and explosiveness based on his film, they certainly had to be when he stole the show Friday -- churning out a 4.58-second 40-yard dash and 42-inch vertical jump at 6-3, 266 pounds.

Only two defensive linemen -- Purdue's Cliff Avril (4.51) and Auburn's Quentin Groves (4.57) -- ran faster at the combine. Avril and Groves are projected as linebackers by teams. Gholston played outside linebacker early in his career with the Buckeyes and has the athleticism to return to the position in the pros, but most scouts view him as a classic pass-rushing defensive end.

That Gholston even elected to work out in Columbus came as a bit of a surprise. The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year already had legitimized his stock as a top 10 prospect with a strong effort at the scouting combine in Indianapolis last month. The junior defensive end was timed at 4.67 in the 40, and topped out at 35.5 inches in the vertical jump.
