AL Player of the Month

Several players have gotten off to quick starts this season. Evan Longoria, Miguel Cabrera, Nick Markakis, and Victor Martinez leap to mind, but Kevin Youkilis has outdone them so far this season. Here is his page: Kevin Youkilis Stats, News, Photos - Boston Red Sox - ESPN

I like Longoria here, but only slightly over Youkilis and Ian Kinsler. Youk was leading the A.L. in average plus hitting for power, but in a stacked lineup. Kinsler's offering across the board production from a position where most teams have an all-field, no-hit type guy, but Longoria has almost single-handedly kept the Rays afloat while their pitching is unexpectedly failing them. Carlos Pena is pacing MLB in HR's, but take a look at what Longoria's done vs. the rival Red Sox over the first month.
Really close call here.

LOVE Markakis, just in general. With the emergence of Adam Jones, could they have a better pure hitting lineup than NY when Wieters finally gets called up?

In May, I think my player of the month will be obvious. Joe Mauer had a month that most hitters can only dream of. 41/99 with 27 runs scored and 32 driven in with 7 doubles, a triple and 11 homers. Here is his page: Joe Mauer Stats, News, Photos - Minnesota Twins - ESPN

For June, Ichiro led the way for hitters going 44/108 with a homer, 2 RBI and 19 runs scored. Adam Lind was 36/100 with 7 homers, 14 RBI and 17 runs scored.
For starters, Gavin Floyd was 3-0 with 40 baserunners allowed (29 hits and 11 walks) in 42.1 innings. He struck out 30 and had an ERA of 1.28. Felix Hernandez was also 3-0 with 37 baserunners allowed (25 hits, 12 walks) in 38.1 innings. He struck out 35 and had an ERA of 0.94.
Closers -- Joe Nathan was nearly perfect for the month, allowing only 5 baserunners (4 hits and a walk) in 11.2 innings. He had 11 saves and an ERA of 0.00.
I may be called a homer for this, but Nathan gets my pick for player of the month in the AL. Here is his page: Joe Nathan Stats, News, Photos - Minnesota Twins - ESPN
