Any pitcher who was an 8 time all star, considering the shelf life of pitchers, rankspretty high up there in my book.

sure wish we could see someone like walter johnson or christy mathewson pitch against today's players. its hard to compare them with today's pitchers otherwise.

someone's gotta say this name, so i will: roger clemens.
  • Won SEVEN cy young awards (that makes nolan's 8 all stars look pretty sad)
  • Led the league in ERA 7 times
  • 354 career wins rank him 9th all time, and another season would put him in the top 5
  • Career 8.5 Ks per 9 innings (only one behind nolan)
  • Career 66% win percentage, 21st all time
  • 4672 career Ks, 3rd all time (yes, 1000 behind nolan)
  • Career 2.96 K / walk ratio (almost a full point above nolan)
  • Top 10 all time in career adjusted ERA

honestly i feel ridiculous even comparing him to nolan ryan.

if youre going just by the numbers, then clemens is top 5 all time -- at worst. he has done everything and more.

Judging by comments of some great hitters, I would have to go with Gibson or Koufax. Don't know much about the "real old timers" like Alexander, Mathewson, Johnson, Young, etc., except their stats from eras that I am not familiar with.

even the dukdown hadn't gone with Gibson, he was my pick.

broken jaw? busted knee?

dude i never met wants to kill me

I saw Bob pitch. I was about 7.

they talked about him in fear, the adults did. every time he threw a pitch, it was like death said a prayer.

The fans at the Candlestick booed.

And backed up.

Bad Ass on the hill

Bad Ass Bob would have rocked Barry's world.

Bob Gibson (1959-1975)

251 wins

3,117 strikeouts

20 or more Ws in 5 seasons

His 1.12 ERA in 1968 is a MLB record which may never be broken, a feat which helped him win the MVP and the first of his 2 Cy Young awards.

8-time All-Star

9-time Gold Glove winner

The RHP was also a good hitter, recording 24 career HRs.

Gibson was always dominant, but was especially so when it mattered most. Along with his 7-2 World Series record was a 1.89 ERA, including two shutouts and he went 9 innings every time out. Gibson fanned 92 batters in those 81 innings while walking just 17.

In Game 1 of the 1968 WS he struck out 17 Detroit Tigers to set a World Series record for strikeouts in one game that still stands today.
