NL Central Talk

Here is the spot to discuss general issues with the Pirates, Reds, Brewers, Cubs, Cardinals and Astros. Individual subjects can still warrant their own threads, as always.

I think the key to a good Cubs season is a healthy and docile Milton Bradley. He led MLB in SLG Pct. last year and has a good chance with this lineup to do it again. Oh, and you know what will have to freeze over.

I'm expecting a Milton Bradley meltdown at some point this season.

Ah, the perils of being one of the few stars on a bad baseball team.
Such is the life for The Pirates Nate McLouth, one of fantasy baseball's biggest breakthroughs from a year ago, and a player hailed as a borderline 30/30 candidate by some … and a one-year wonder by others. Such divergent opinion on a player leads to unpredictability in bidding (or selecting) at the draft table, but I'm taking a firm stance on Mr. McLouth:
He's a budding star.

The Brewers did make some effort to re-sign ace CC Sabathia this offseason, although it was apparent pretty early in the process they wouldn't have the funds. Fans in Milwaukee didn't expect anything different and knew Ben Sheets would join Sabathia in being anywhere but Wisconsin. However, the team knew that even when the aces bolted, the Brewers had another in the hole. Yovani Gallardo is going to be up to the challenge.

The fantasy world yawned this time last year when The Cubs Ryan Dempster made the move from the bullpen to the starting rotation. Without the benefit of all those saves, Dempster's mediocre overall numbers appeared that they would translate poorly as a starter. Well, we were all wrong.
Instead of looking like the ugly but productive pitcher of recent vintage, Dempster became one of the biggest surprises of the season. Dempster won a career-best 17 games, sported an ERA better than three, struck out 187 and had a career-best 1.21 WHIP. He hadn't looked that good since being named to the All-Star team way back in 2000 when he was with the Marlins. While Dempster's average draft position was still in the 200s (because of his past as a closer), he went undrafted in many mixed leagues but finished 10th among all starting pitchers on the player rater.

Will Ryan Dempster's great 2008 season carry over into 2009? - ESPN
