Baseball News- Week of 24th February 2008

Bartolo Colon P BOS

Red Sox signed RHP Bartolo Colon to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Colon will earn more than $1 million if he makes the team, but it sounds like he'll start off in the minors. "This is a low-risk, potential high reward signing," GM Theo Epstein said. "It’s a minor league contract and he will show up at camp tomorrow and we will do an evaluation of how far away he is from helping us. It takes more than five starting pitchers to get through a season. Obviously he’s an accomplished guy and if we can get him back to the form where he is throwing well he can certainly help us at some point this season." Epstein said there was an out clause in the deal, allowing Colon to become a free agent if he wasn't in the majors by a certain date, but he wouldn't say what that date was.

Francisco Liriano P MIN

A Twins official said Francisco Liriano twice hit 97 miles an hour during a recent bullpen session and pitched consistently at 92-95.

Brad Lidge P PHI

Brad Lidge underwent successful surgery on his right knee Monday and will miss 3-6 weeks.

"He went in and cleaned out about 15 to 18 percent of it, which leaves him a good 80 percent of the meniscus left," Phillies trainer Scott Sheridan said. "For us, it really was the best-case scenario that it was the only thing going on. His other side of the knee that he had repaired (Oct. 1) was fine, so it's pretty simple for us." Lidge still has a chance of being ready for Opening Day.

Tom Gordon P PHI

Manager Charlie Manuel said Sunday that Tom Gordon "would definitely" take over as the Phillies' closer if Brad Lidge isn't ready to begin the season on time following knee surgery.

Adam Wainwright P STL

Without making anything official, manager Tony La Russa indicated Sunday that Adam Wainwright will be the Cardinals' Opening Day starter.

"You want to get off with your best chance to have your best-pitched game," La Russa said. "The way Adam finished and what he's done for us, you'd have to give him the benefit of the doubt at this point."

Barry Bonds OF

The Rays have been in discussions with Bonds' agent, the St. Petersburg Times reports.

Matt Kemp OF LAD

Manager Joe Torre had high praise for Kemp after watching him hit an opposite-field triple in Sunday's intrasquad game.

For those who miss hearing the wonderful sound of the crack of the bat. This one sounds like a rifle shot.

Francisco Liriano had some difficulty getting his visa this season due to off-field difficulties in the Dominican Republic. It seems he was picked up for a DUI. He is in camp in Ft. Myers and looking like the ace the Twins need him to become, although he will likely be the 3rd starter for a time and be skipped on off-days to save his shoulder and elbow.

No sweat, gm. I'm just happy to see box scores to read, especially with the Twins looking pretty good this spring.

  • A Rod has been limited to DH duties due to a sore shoulder
  • Andy LaRoche, who was vying with Nomar Garciaparra for the job, tore a ligament in his right thumb Friday and will need surgery that could sideline him for eight to 10 weeks.
  • The A's may not take Eric Chavez to Japan as he rehabs his back.
  • Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton has a small herniated disk and slight arthritis in his balky back.
  • Francisco Liriano faced a major league team for the first time in 18 months, gave up no runs and felt no pain.
  • San Diego Padres center fielder Jim Edmonds is expected to miss two to three weeks with a strained right calf, a setback for a team that was a bit shaky in the outfield to begin with.
  • Troy Patton will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, delaying the left-hander's debut with the Baltimore Orioles until at least 2009.
  • The Boston Red Sox and closer Jonathan Papelbon agreed Thursday to a $775,000, one-year contract, nearly doubling his salary.
  • Albert Pujols' injury elbow is a "high grade tear" of the ligament, but, as he announced when he arrived at the St. Louis Cardinals' spring training home in mid-February, he won't have surgery.
  • Texas Rangers pitcher Brandon McCarthy likely will start the season on the disabled list because of inflammation in his forearm. No ligament damage, but 4-6 weeks out of action
  • 27-year-old Noah Lowry walked nine of 12 batters against Texas last week, then was diagnosed with exertional compartmental syndrome -- an exercise-induced neuromuscular condition that causes pain and swelling. Mid -April return.
  • Josh Beckett's recovery appears to be going backward, according to several media reports. It is said his back spasmed out in warmups and he didn't pitch Sat. vs the Marlins

Maybe Billy Crystal will get more than 1 day with the Yankees?
The Yankees have the approval of the Commissioner's office to add Billy Crystal to their roster and allow him to play in one game this week. He'll be 60 on the 14th and their contract is for 1 day. I, for one, am pleased to see this. He has been a Yankee fan since he was 4 and loves the game. He showed Tom Janes how Mickey Mantle swung the bat for his movie *61. Maybe he can actually play a bit?
