Week one

Chad Cordero p was

Cordero (shoulder tendinitis) will have his shoulder evaluated on Wednesday. Cordero was diagnosed with tendinitis after feeling sharp pains in his shoulder before Sunday's Opener against Atlanta. He will not pitch for at least the next two days.

Carlos Zanbrano p Cubs

Carlos Zambrano is day-to-day with forearm cramps, according to the Cubs.

They probably still have Mark Prior listed as day-to-day, too. Still, it's good news for Zambrano. From the way he grabbed at his hand, it appeared as though he might have popped a ligament in his finger, which would have been a disaster.

Elijah Dukes OF Was

Nationals placed outfielder Elijah Dukes on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right hamstring

Victor Martinez C Cle

The Indians are calling Victor Martinez day-to-day with tightness in his left hamstring.
Tightness is something that develops. Martinez suffered an injury that caused him to miss a step, limp a couple of times and then fall down at second base. We'd say it's at least 50-50 that he lands on the disabled list

JD Drew OF Bos

J.D. Drew (back) took batting practice and shagged fly balls on Sunday but has not been cleared to play.

Drew missed both games in Japan with a strained back and is questionable for Tuesday's game in Oakland. If he is unavailable, expect Coco Crisp to start in center and Jacoby Ellsbury in right.

Yovani Gallardo P Mil

Gallardo (knee) will make a rehab start for Triple-A Nashville on Thursday, according to the team web site. The Brewers will have Gallardo make at least two rehab starts and then talk about making a third if need be. Everything has gone well for Gallardo during his rehab so it's possible that he'll return after his second start.

From what I've read, Gallardo will be up with the Brewers when his DL stint is over.
Fransisco Liriano is making a couple of minor league starts to be sure he's ready for the rigors of the bigs. I look for him to be back up around the middle of April and only miss a couple of starts.

Some early bad news

Pedro Martinez P Mets

The Mets announced that they expect Pedro Martinez to miss 4-6 weeks with a mild left hamstring strain.

JJ Putz P SEA

Mariners placed RHP J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list with mild costochondritis on his right side.

Some good News Josh Beckett should be on the mound for the Redsox on Saturday against Toronto.

The Mets lack of pitching depth will cause them to fall into a deep hole early in the season.

The Tigers did not get off to the start everyone expected from them. With the deal they made last winter for Cabrera and Willis, 0-6 was not where they thought they would be after a week, especially when the first 6 games were at home and against the Royals and White Sox.
This said, I expect to see Jim Leyland "right the ship" and see the Tigers and Indians battle for the division title until the end of the season.
