Chiefs Franchise Jared Allen

www.kansascity.com | 02/18/2008 | Chiefs give Allen the franchise tag

Quote:
The Chiefs made defensive end Jared Allen their franchise player today.
This development means the Chiefs are offering Allen a one-year contract worth about $8.9 million.

Quote:
In a move long expected, the Cardinals placed their franchise tag on linebacker Karlos Dansby Thursday, the first time the team has used the tag since 2002.

Dansby gets the “non-exclusive” tag, meaning he can still negotiate with other teams as a free agent and sign an offer sheet if he chooses. If that happens, the Cardinals can either match the offer or the team must give the Cards two first-round draft picks.
Isn't that the same tag the Seahawks put on Hutch ?? That sure back-fired

Bengals have franchised OL Stacy Andrews
Quote:
Cincinnati Bengals guard Stacy Andrews became the third NFL free agent to receive the franchise designation.

To keep him from leaving via free agency, the Bengals officially Monday gave Andrews a one-year, $7.455 million contract offer. Any team wanting to pull him away from the Bengals would have to give up two first-round picks.

Andrews helped anchor an offensive line that allowed just 17 sacks last season. Only New Orleans gave up fewer sacks, surrendering 16 in 2007.

Mojo beating me to the punch on Andrews so I'll give some feedback. At first, 7.5 mil for what may be an opening day back-up seems like a crazy idea. However, Marvin Lewis has stressed getting back to running the ball in 08' and that starts up front. Andrews is a beast and came in very raw. He is starting to come into his own and at 26, is still VERY young! He can likely start at 4 spots on the offensive line which gives you a vast amount of versatility, and protection. The downfall is it ties a lot money up in OT's already having Willie and Jones around. It doesn't sound like Anderson is in danger of being cut, but don't rule it out either.

This move paves the way for defensive starters Justin Smith (tagged in 07) and Madieu Williams to hit the open market as unrestrictive free agents.

Stacy Andrews is not only a beast, but a very athletic beast. We tend to look at skill position players way too much as fans. Locking up a guy like Andrews this year is not a bad idea at all. Very young and still improving.

Titans have stated they will tag Albert Haynesworth at the deadline if no deal is stuck. So anyone dreaming of adding this beast to plug up their defensive front and keep dreaming, he'll be a Titan again next year.

That's the key Mike, you hit it on the head, "athlethic". Sky is the limit for him, and his athleticism makes him VERY versatile. Seriously, either one of your gaurds or tackles go down, and he can slide in there. Not to mention, I can't see him not sticking as a starter somewhere on the front 5. I just hope they can use this and springboard it into a reasonable long-term deal for him. He'd be nice to lock up long term.

It is amazing how this guy went from being a 99% probability of being cut after his stupid foot to the forehead incident, to becoming a guy that the Titans refuse to part ways with.

Remember this when it comes time for the Titans to do something with Pacman Jones.

i believe stacy andrews is a legit player, but to consider him a "franchise" player is ludicrous, thats all. so much for franchise tag.

And LJ Smith and Karlos Dansby are?? It's a cap tool to retain a player, nothing more, nothing less. Too much is made about a simple name they place on something. From a financial standpoint, when you look at the big picture this actually makes sense, although I agree, it's a name you wouldn't immediately think of for the tag.

Rumors are out there still that Willie AND Rudi are cap casualties this year. I think Rudi's will depend on how RB shapes up with injuries coming back. Watson would take Rudi's roll..at a considerably cheaper amount.

As for OT and Andrews. Welcome to Cincy their new starting ROT. Willie will be cut, or renegotiated.

no, of course none of them are. just goes to show that the franchise tag isnt used for franchise players at all anymore, like it was intended, which was precisely my point in the HG discussion on that lol.

now this is really interesting...

ESPN - Ravens want to franchise Suggs at LB; he says he should be DE - NFL

no surprise at suggs being franchised, but interesting to see the argument over what position he ought to be at, and thus how much money he should be making. i thought of this when you just mentioned stacy andrews above too, switching from G to T. very interesting.

I saw a FT $$ somewhere. One thing that suprised me was there was no split for OT/OG. Just listed as Olineman. I'll see if I can find it
