49er RB Frank Gore Breaks Hand In Practice

Frank Gore, the San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl running back, broke a bone in his right hand Monday during the first padded practice of training camp and might not play in the preseason.

Sounds like Gore will be back soon practicing in a cast. He is already projected to miss the first preseason game and may miss all preseason action as a result of this injury

Not sure how much impact on Gore this will have. IMO, it does not effect his value enough for me to move him any.

This should give Hicks and Robinson some extra snaps with the first team and some playing time in preseason games. RR

I seem to remember some backs playing in casts before. I want to say Tiki..but I could be way off there.

To me the issue is, once it is known...that simply will be a huge target for the defense. Gonna be real tough for Gore now.

They ran Robinson so much in practice that he had to leave dehydrated.

This is a pefect example of an injury being a blessing to Gore owners and the 49er's in general. Gore will be very fresh for the season opener and the hand is minor.

Ive played with a broken hand, and I played d-line and o-line. It won't be an issue. He'll have a hard cast on the top and a soft cast around the palm. He'll be fine. It will probably come off before the first regular season game, and he may wear a soft cast for protection. shouldn't affect his performance. He may get a few less carries in week 1, but that's about it.

We'll see. playing O-line or D-line with a cast is a bit different than trying to carry the football in your arm with a cast on it.

yeah, pushing around 250 lbs guys with a cast was much easier then carrying a ball with one, because you don't really use your hands for that.

Boy, you don't even try to see the point, do you. Ok, let me spell it out so a 12 year old can understand. Yes, you use your hands on the line, but with an RB they carry a football, the line doesn't. Also, when they carry the ball, they have their hand on the point and the long side of the ball is between their chest and their forearm. If you have a slippery cast on your forearm, the ball can come out easier. We're talking about Gore's dominant carrying arm. If this was typically his off arm, then the situation would be better.

I understand your point, and yes, I know how you carry a football. But in the moment of the game, you don't worry about casts or pain. Gore is a professional. Yes, it will alter the way he will carry the ball, but he'll still be able to carry the ball. That's my point.

I believe that they allow the Tennis tape that is used to wrap racket handles to be used on casts. It has a grip to it so things dont slip when swetty. RR

I didn't say he won't play. I said we'll see. The reason I said it is a cast on your carrying arm is way different than a cast on your off arm. Maybe they'll work Gore carrying with his left hand. 4 weeks is not a lot of time to get comfortable when you've spent your whole career carrying the ball in your right hand. This doesn't have anything to do with Gore being a sissy or unprofessional.
Look folks, at the end of the day it's different and Gore may or may not be able to adapt. As I said, we'll see.
