Carolina Backfield Party

DeAngelo Williams Vs Jonathon Stewart.
This is an interesting battle in what will probably become a RBBC.
They come into the draft with 1 young, talented, but unproven RB in their backfield. Then comes the 13th pick in the draft and they take Jonathon Stewart. This has to frustrate Williams a little bit. Right after DeShaun Foster disappears they go and spend their 1st pick on another back.
In 2 years Williams has been real quiet. He's averaging just over 600 yards with 1 TD per year. Not exactly the type of guy you want on your roster. Here is his upside though. He has rushed for a gaudy 4.6 yds per carry. These carries are probably more on late, typical non rushing downs.
One would have to think that Williams will get the bulk of the carries here like Foster did last year with Stewart getting some time on 3rd down duty. Could Stewart show up and blow the lid off it though?? If he performs well could he become the man.
Right now it seems drafters are siding with Stewart. His ADP is at 66. This would be 5.6 in a 12 man league. Williams is hot on his tail though at 75. 6.3 in a 12 man league.
So I put it in your hands Outlaws. Who do you want on your squad?

I loved DeAngelo Williams in college. I loved him coming out. I loved him behind DeShaun Foster. I loved him in front of DeShaun Foster. And all of that love hasn't done me much of a crapload of good.

The guy has had every shot and simply hasn't shown that he can be a legitimate NFL running back. I still wouldn't be surprised to see it happen, but he won't be on my team when it does.

I go back and forth on Stewart. I never cared for him at Oregon, and I don't believe he can sustain the beating of an NFL season. But on the other hand, the guy runs like a cross between Emmitt Smith and Maurice Jones-Drew, and Carolina has needed a plow like him since Stephen Davis retired. The further Stewart gets from Oregon, the further up my draft charts he goes. I don't believe he has Peterson rookie potential, but only a few in the history of the game have. But I do think this kid could be a viable, even an excellent RB2.

If Stewart can stay healthy, it is a no brainer. The guy is a freak. He could have played in the NFL as a H.S. sophomore.

Will he be the man from day 1, or is this the kind of situation that develops post week 5?

I think Stewart is your week 1 starter.

Carolina was up front last year in terms of DeAngelo Williams abilities, saying he couldn't handle the load as a starter. It may have been said to light a fire under him, but it didn't work. I think Williams has the physical ability to start, but he doesn't have the mental ability.

Sorry, thought I had made that clear. I would be in the Stewart camp, if I'm in one at all. I think he'll be starting early or right away, and if I had one of those top picks and went WR-WR in rounds 2 and 3, he'd be an ideal guy to look at as a 5th round pick for some RB upside, perhaps to pair with a safer choice like Edge, Rudi, or Jones in the 4th. Last year I recommended the same thing with Barber in the 4th and Peterson in the 5th, and that obviously worked far better than I'd have ever expected.

Well, I guess I will be the voice of reason.

The starter will be DeAngelo Williams. He will split carries, but will get more mileage than MJD in Jax. HC likes to stick with his vets. He has always done that. When they drafted Foster did he start right away..nope....then he got hurt. When he was starting and had issues and they had drafted Williams did they start Williams...no, unless Foster was hurt. Then they did. I have not heard one negative comment from HC or any in management about Williams. I think the thought behind drafting Stewart was he was there, he will be their redzone back(which they direly needed) and he will be short yardage this year.

I actually am very high on Williams this year.

Valid points for both sides here. Im starting to think that I don't want either of these guys. This season could so easily go either way. Williams could be the #1 guy and have a nice year. Stewart could come in and steal that job away with some powerful running. Or they could end up spliting it fairly even with neither one of them being an outstanding fantasy option.
I'll move for one of them on a gamble as a backup but Im staying away from picking one of them in my RB2 spot.
