Packers gaining confidence in Rodgers

Packers gaining confidence in Rodgers' strong arm
John Clayton
June 18, 2008
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The best evidence of how much Brett Favre's presence suffocated the attention of Packers outsiders resides in the right arm of Aaron Rodgers.

As it turns out, Rodgers has a very strong arm. He's had the strong arm since he's been in Green Bay. The football explodes off his hand on each throw in practice. Teammates have noticed it for years because they work with or against him in practice.

this is no surprise. he was one of this draft risers who could throw the football between the uprights from his knees at the 50. lets see him manage a game.

Aaron is something of a rookie right now regarding your week in and week out production.

On the other hand had Aaron gone to a team where he had to play right away like Alex Smith things may have gotten ugly.

Duk once told me there was no way Rodgers was ready for the NFL. That was in 2005. I believe that and consider Rodgers lucky.

It's 2008 and time to shine. The selection of Brohm is an intangible that I don't think necessarily indicates lack of faith. But it has to be troubling for a young player replacing a legend in a town ready for another title.

Either way theyve got two potential franchise QBs on that roster..but potential and translation are two different things.

Id sure like to see what both of them can do.

This time of the year the shocking thing would have been if the Coaches had voiced concern about him at all. I am excited about the Packers this year though, and feel he will be a great sleeper top 10 or 12 Qb play, when you add the whole season up.

Aaron Rodgers has grown dramatically as a leader in his four years with the team and appeared comfortable in the locker room in his new role as the franchise quarterback. However, the job gets astronomically tougher in the regular season when he has to deal with interceptions, bad games and losses.

He has a big-league arm, and his mobility will add a dimension to the offense, though his relatively rough practice on Wednesday showed he's far from a finished product.

Anyone looking for second-round pick Brian Brohm to push Rodgers this summer will be disappointed. If Brohm has a decent first couple of weeks of training camp, the Packers appear ready to go with him as backup. He made plenty of bad decisions and took way too many sacks, but he showed enough ability and awareness to suggest he's a prospect. But if Brohm has a rough time early in camp, the Packers probably will sign a veteran as a possible No. 2.

Seventh-round pick Matt Flynn was slower to pick up the offense and doesn't have Brohm's arm, so he had an even rougher time during the offseason. But he flashed scrambling talent and some ability to throw on the run. If the gamer qualities he showed at LSU translate to the NFL, it probably won't be obvious until preseason games.

I had this guy sort of in a package deal, the guy was pretty much offering him to me for a 5th round pick as part of a 'gimme' for giving him my two first round picks last season, kind of like a "I'm a sorry for trading you crap for those two first, how about I give your Rodgers for pretty much nothing as a peace offering trade." I declined because I had three QB which is max and did not want to dump any of them.

Kinda wish I had now...LOL
