Porter has hamstring surgery

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jaguars wide receiver Jerry Porter had surgery Friday to repair a torn hamstring tendon and will miss all the preseason.

It was a significant setback for a team with Super Bowl expectations.

Porter signed a six-year, $30 million contract with Jacksonville in February and was supposed to give the team its first go-to receiver since Jimmy Smith retired. But he missed most of minicamp and organized team activities with hamstring problems.

Team doctors thought it would heal during the layoff before training camp, but decided Friday that surgery would be the best option to ensure Porter would be healthy during the season.

The Jaguars said Porter would be out six to eight weeks, with hopes that he could be ready for the Sept. 7 season opener at Tennessee.

The Associated Press: Jaguars' Porter has hamstring surgery

That means almost zero work with Garrard before the season starts.

Porter was penciled in to be the Jags #2 Wr with Dennis Northcutt playing the slot. As OTAs progessed there was talk of Troy Williamson looking very good. This lead to some speculation that Porter and Williamson would rotate at the #2 WR position during the season. This would seem to open the door for Troy Williamson to take fulltime duties as the #2 Wr. But camp starts soon a we will get more info then and share it with you.

This reinforces my interest in Reggie Williams. He can be had real late and could easliy return close to #2 Wr numbers. I realize it is hard to expect double digit Td's again, with around just 5 catches, but I don't feel the catch count last season was close to a ceiling, and with 20 more, he could easily reapproach a double digit TD season. He and Garrard found something last year that wasn't lost on them, and now Jones is gone, and Porter basically done. I can't think of a better Wr #4 canidate that can be had after round 10.

Agree with you here. Northcutt was the only wr out of early camp reports to have been solid. Williamson had glowing reports but until he proves it at game speed we should all remain skeptical. I like Williams more this year IF he can't come back from the injury.
