Is the Third Time the Turn?

Well, the San Diego Chargers came to a decision, a rather quick decision in my opinion, on the new head coach of their franchise. Norv Turner will now start his 3rd attempt as a NFL Head Coach in sunny San Diego. Turner was hired by the San Diego Chargers to replace the “beheaded” Schottenheimer after his firing early last week. What kind of impact will Turner have on the “monster” team with a 14-2 record last season? What will happen to the promising offensive line in San Francisco? In the months to come we will know for sure, but for now here are a few things to think about.

In San Diego: I can’t help but to think that Turner helped forge LaDainian Tomlinson into the athlete that he has become today. Turner was the Offensive Coordinator in San Diego in 2001, which was “LT’s” rookie year. So hopefully we should see a barrage of fresh measures on how to continue to use “LT” as the force in their offense. In my own opinion “LT” should have another break out performance with Turner as his Head Coach. I believe Turner will also continue to develop the young Philip Rivers into a more confident and precise quarterback much as he has with Alex Smith. So the offensive line looks very promising.

In San Francisco: When you think of ‘San Fran’ you have to think of Frank Gore. Gore, having Turner as his offensive coordinator last season, rushed for 1,695 yards and averaged 5.4 yards per carry. Gore led the NFC in rushing yards and became the first player in 49ers history to do so. Also, you have a maturing Alex Smith who is becoming a promising quarterback with great potential. Mike Nolan, the 49’ers Head Coach, has said that his offense “will remain the same, with or without Turner.” For the sake of 49’ers fans and fantasy football I hope so.

Overall: Norv is in a sticky situation in San Diego. The franchise and fans are expecting production that begins with the letter “W” in the regular season as well as the playoffs. They have the talent and ability to march in and conquer, but it is Turner’s record as Head Coach (58-82) that turns “bright skies to a cloudy gray.”

As I read somewhere else, I think you have to not look at his record so much. As a head coach, I think he was given bad situations to try to deal with, unlike here in San Diego, where he is walking in with a better team and like you stated, worked with LT2 before.

I think alot will also be determined in how the players take Norv. If they give him the chance, LT2 may assist in this and anyone else that was there at that time, then there will be a good season. If they take the bad side, and see just his losing record as a HC, then there will prolly be strife and a losing season to come.

Only time will tell though, and he could be that coach that always has bad records, but he could come in and shock everyone and win SB XLII!
