Brady Quinn Can Fix An NFL Franchise

From a link in the news blog, Brady Quinn feels he has what it takes to turn around a troubled NFL franchise, and believes these skills are why he should be the first Notre Dame player to be the first overall pick in 35 years.

Good points made in the article, and as someone that tends to believe this is one of the better quarterbacks to hit the NFL in a while, I tend to agree with what was said.

From the article:

Quote:
Quinn didn't say it, but he also knows what it's like to try to win when not all the pieces are in place. Quinn played on an Irish team that didn't have overpowering offensive lines and its defense was average at best.
Quote:
"When Peyton Manning came out, people said he couldn't win the big one, he couldn't beat Florida," said Gil Brandt, an analyst for NFL.com, who was vice president of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys from 1960-89. "People say the same thing about Brady Quinn. I disagree with all that. I think if it wasn't for Brady and his production, Notre Dame never would have been there playing LSU and they wouldn't have been playing in a game as big as the USC game was."
Quote:
"JaMarcus obviously is a big kid with a strong arm. But I'm a big kid with a strong arm and much more," he said. "I'm not as big as him. I'm a little leaner. But I've played four years, started the past four years and been through a lot."

The stakes are high. NFL draft history is littered with failed college quarterbacks, such as Ryan Leaf, Heath Shuler, Todd Marinovich, Rick Mirer, Joey Harrington and others. But Brandt believes Quinn will succeed.

"I think the guy is a polished, mature individual that knows where he's going and knows how he's going to get there," he said.

In the interest of past Notre Dame QB comps, can he be as fantastic as Montana, or as inconsequential as Mirer?

I'll split the difference and go Theisman, which probably isn't quite worthy of a top-10 pick.

I think he is very average. I didn't see anything in any of his games that make me think he will be this great QB.

To me, this is a guy that did more than most other quarterbacks would have been able to do, given the situation. At no time at Notre Dame, did he have a good offensive line to work behind, nor an exceptionally talented offense overall, and to add to that, he had to work with two seperate coaches, Willingham and Weiss, both coming in and basically starting new programs and different offenses.

That is a big task for a college kid to take on, and from what I seen, he handled it pretty well. Rather than use comparisons to quarterbacks that went to the same school, if I have to compare him to anybody, I see a resemblence to Troy Aikman.

I am absolutly torn on Quinn. I think, given the right offense, and tools, he could be something pretty good. I don't think he will ever achieve Manning(Peyton ) or Marino or Favre status. However, given the right system...and Aikman or Young comparison could be possible.

My fear though, is he will be drafted by a need team, he will be thrust in to start right away, will get killed...and you won't ever know. So the Carr analogy by Miller_time could be correct also.

Wow, I would take Aikman or Young over Marino and Favre anyday.

As for starting right away, let him. He can handle it. A guy like Carr never should have started in his rookie season, or any season after. I think Quinn is up for the challenge of getting in there right away, if not the first game, by midseason at the latest. No need to let this guy sit on the bench for a year

That is where you and I differ. What kills most of these young Qbs are due to being thrust into a starting role before they or the team is ready. You cannot expect any young QB to flourish or win, with crap around him. The best that can happen is a year or so if experience that helps him learn the game, the speed, and allows the team to continue to gain around him. I don't think it has anything to do with the Qb or his personality at all....much.

I think Phillip Rivers was a much more talented and polished QB coming out than Quinn is.
I also think that the absolute best thing that could've happened to Rivers was to be in a stable situation with a gamer like Brees in place to learn from while studying and adjusting.
Lastly, I think Quinn will be well served to be in a similar situation regardless of where he lands, and will allow him to realize his full potential 5 years from now.

Quinn's not going to be anything. It's not that he can't, although I doubt his ability to perform given that he's choked during every big game during his college career, it's just that he's going to be stuck on a team with no OL to speak of and is going to get killed.
