those look like pretty irrelevant variables to me.

Thought i would raise this topic again.

A report in one of the San Antonio news papers has a statement from Dallas that it will be status Quo at rb this year. So drop you value on Jones, and raise it again on Barber as he will get redzone, and garbage time carries again. Per the HC.

Before we take that statement and run with it, here is the article
MySA.com: KENS 5: Sports

Philips said
Quote:
“It used to be you had one running back,” coach Wade Phillips said. “Now it's changed where a lot of teams have been able to utilize two good backs. That's the situation I've walked into and I think it's a good situation.”
He did not say he will do what Parcells did last year. In fact, he is greatly changing up how Julius Jones is used this year by adding in more draw plays for Jones, and screen passes for Jones because Jones' receiving abilities were under-utilized last year.

Nobody is saying that Barber is going to be phased out of the offense, he has too much talent for that. He will be the "third down back", and he will get some goal line work. Unlike last year though, he wont get all the redzone work like Parcells used him for.

Now, you can look at Philips statement and read into it however you want to. This reporter chose to angle it toward things being exactly like last year. The reporters that actually cover the team on a daily basis though, and report on the practices have a different viewpoint on it.

LOL,

No, there just seems to be a ton of national guys, and guys that have witnessed little to no practice time for Dallas who assume that Parcells must be secretly coaching this team still.

All we hear about is how there are "rumblings" for Marion Barber to start, while nobody talks about how the coaching staff has been dealing with Barber not running as well as he did last year and trying to work the "dancing around" out of him. Nor do you hear anything about Philips being very impressed with Julius Jones and his abilities.

The guys who cover the team locally (the actual guys who are around the team for practices and around Valley Ranch on a daily basis) say one thing, but national talking heads opinions are the ones that seem to get taken as the gospel.

This pre-season....................

JJ
25 rushes for 87 yards
5 catches for 29 yards
1 td

Barber
29 rushes for 119 yards
5 catches for 23 yards
2 tds

....................looks no different than last season to me.

Seems to me they want to keep JJ's image up, as they are gonna trade him next year. If they bench him, they get less. If they slam him, they get less.

What is the point of pre-season stats when most of Barbers carries have been against reserve units, and the Cowboys offensive line has primarily went with backups at the tackle positions due to the starters still rehabbing off-season surgery?

If you want to look at the stats, look at them how the guys around here are discussing them. When Barber has been brought in with the first unit, he has repeatedly been hit in the backfield. When he continues to play against the other teams backups, he looks pretty good.

I guess I could have posted 2006 regular season stats, but they couldn't penetrate the rose colored glasses you're wearing, when it comes to this issue. Barber schooled JJ last season, but I suppose they were also subs when he carried, or already softened up????

Probably not, unless you were going to also tell me that Parcells was going to coach the team again this year.

Statistics aside, look at the wins and losses last year.

When Julius Jones was getting most of the carries, tell me the win/loss record.

When Barber started getting a large amount of carries, tell me the win/loss record.

What is boils down to, is whether you want to base a forecast on this year on a system from last year, with a different coaching staff. I choose not to, and I would much rather base my decisions on what is being said locally, as opposed to what people who have seen very little of the team are predicting.

If I am wrong, it won't be the first or last time.

No excuses for JJ after this season.

One quick question. What have the locals been saying about where JJ plays next year?

Nobody is speculation him to play anywhere else, some are expecting him to be handed a contract extension by mid-season.

This team does not have plans to go forward with Barber as their starter.

If Julius Jones moves on after this season, it will be due to Dallas drafting Darren McFadden with Cleveland's first round pick. This is something that has been speculated on during the off-season, but that was before training camp got here and Philips started speaking highly of Julius Jones.

Enough about Julius Jones for a minute.

Something I have mentioned regarding Barber in 2-3 threads that has yet to be discussed, rather quickly overlooked by those who are already sold on Barber this season.

Barber is "not" running the same as he did last year. He has started dancing around in the backfield, something that the coaching staff is not happy about him doing. As a result, as I have stated, he has been hit for countless losses.

Why is this being totally overlooked by those in the Barber camp here?

And if you look at the games late last season, when Dallas started losing, you will notice that he started doing this back then.

Not sure what you mean.

Somebody that I pay the most attention to regarding Dallas is Mickey Spagnola. This guy's job for years has been to cover the team, and if you pay close attention to him, you will find out he is normally right about things going on with this team, long before it even becomes a story.

He gives updates on the team daily on the local sports station here, and does several columns on dallascowboys.com.

When I hear about the coaching staff screaming at Barber over his new style of running, this is where I hear about it from, the guy that was actually there reporting on the mini-camp or practice.

Personally, I love the situation. A guy that has gotten little attention so far is Tyson Thompson, who if you remember, was running very well last season before getting hurt.

This guy has came back 100%, and on top of that, is running much smarter than he did last year. If he sticks through the cuts to 53, this a a great rotation of running backs to have.

Here is an article from last week. Doesn't give any information on expected workloads, just a good read on Julius Jones and his attitude this year compared to last year.
