"Close Call" #11 - Marvin Harrison - WR - Ind *vs* Reggie Wayne - WR - Ind

If you need a refresher on the rules for the series or a run down of previous match-ups? Here is the rules and history thread:
"Close Calls 2007" - A Sportsoutlaw.com Exclusive
Remember, this is based on re-draft leagues.
Today's Match-up:

Marvin Harrison - WR - Ind *vs* Reggie Wayne - WR - Ind

Last Year's Stats:
Marvin Harrison - 95 rec - 1366 yds - 12 TD's
Reggie Wayne - 86 rec - 1310 - 9 TD's

Today we have teammates going at it in a battle of Elite WR's. Is this the year Harrison finally begins his decent? Or does he notch his 9th straight double digit TD season? Can Wayne show up all season like he did in the middle of the year? Who is going to be the top dog in Indy this season? These are some of the questions you will need to answer in today's "Close Call."

Damn! This might be the best one yet.

Give me Reggie Wayne. Time has shown me over the past two years that when the Colts are struggling for yardage, and the offense is up against a brick wall, it is Wayne that is open, and Wayne that comes up big.

I expect the Colts to see plenty of struggles this year, and also expect Wayne to clearly be the #1 receiver in this dynamic offense.

Marvin Harrison is the absolute gold standard for fantasy receiving stats. He is unbelievably productive and unbelievably consistent. Many people were predicting that he would drop off significantly last year and he ended up being the best. Maybe he isn't going to repeat those numbers from last year, maybe he ends up falling 20 yards short of being the #1 WR...

I mean he is 35 years old at this point....

I am going to lean to Marvin here.

I think they will be very close again, but Manning looks for Marvin in key situations....

I also think both drop some...as I believe Gonzales will reprise the roll of Stokely, and take alot of production from both.

Gotta go Wayne. This isn't baseball where players get better w/age. Living in Indiana I saw all of the games and Mike is right as a Harrision owner last year I saw Manning not even look in Harrison's direction for almost the first half of the year.

number of TDs harrison has had more than wayne each of the last four years.

2-13-2-15

number of spots in the WR rankings harrison has been higher than wayne each of the last four years.

harrison will get more catches this year.
he'll get more yards this year.
he'll get more TDs this year.
he'll score more fantasy points this year.
again.

nice clips birdman.

this is a great close call, because it just seems to come up every year. and every year i take harrison. wayne is great. no denying that, and i am always thrilled to have him on my team. but harrison is THE man. he and peyton are telepathic. i will believe he's slowing down when i see some evidence. as yet, there is none.

as bomb has so nicely pointed out, just look at the numbers.

GAH!!! the clips wont load :(
stupid work blocking my fun.....

but yah, another vote for harrison. Da Bomb pretty much nailed all the reasons.

oh, and in reply to Chrisslabaugh & manning not looking for harrison for the 1st half:
first 5 games: 9 - 7 - 6 - 7 - 3 grabs... not bad when your QB isnt even looking for you. (and two 100 yard games).

i agree with Mike on one thing, it does seem Wayne comes up with the bigger "game changing" play when Indy needs it. But this is fantasy football, i dont care if Wayne scores a TD to tie the game with 10 secs left, and Harrison gets a TD when the score is 28-0.... it all counts the same. Wayne's yards might be in "more important" situations , but harrison will just end up with more in the end, and thats all i care about.

Every year since Wayne has been the starter his catches and yards have gone up (except for 05 when catches went up but yards dropped about 150) Every year except for last year since Wayne has been the number two receiver Harrison's catches and yards have been gradually decreasing. Eventually those numbers are going to meet in the middle and this is that year. Last year was a GREAT year for Harrison but he had something to prove. He is not a huge receiver and he is going to lose a step or two every year as the corners get bigger and faster and he gets older and slower. I love Harrison he is a great player but Wayne is the FF WR I will be targeting from the Colts this year

and every year harrison continues to score double digit TDs. and wayne does not.

harrison currently has a streak of 8 consecutive seasons with double digit receiving TDs. guess how many other WRs have done that in NFL history? zero.

go ahead, keep fighting against history. hope that wayne gets double digit TDs this year for the second time in his career. i'll go ahead and take the WR who will get the numbers wayne would get if he has a great year.

If no one has done eight what makes you think he can do nine?

because hes one of the best two WRs in NFL history, not a great #2 product of the system who is lucky he plays across one of the best two WRs in NFL history.

I'm not saying Wayne is better or will be better over the course of his career just that he WILL score more fantasy points THIS year.

fine. and im saying that i'll keep drafting harrison first every single year until wayne proves me wrong. i mean, we're talking about a guy who has never even had back to back top 20 WR seasons!

I'm quite happy to let other people draft Reggie Wayne when harrison is on the board still. I'm also quite happy to take Wayne when harrison is not on the board. But I will not part of the former group. Harrison keeps getting older, true, but his performance doesn't fall off at all. He's a cagey receiver who doesn't rely nearly as much on physical attributes as those guys whose careers start to fade in their early thirties. He's the best route runner in football, and more importantly Peyton manning trusts him more than anyone else on the team. Manning is the real factor here. He trusts harrison more than Wayne and throws to him more (because he's open more) and thus Harrison gets more fantasy points.

i agree with bpipes.

peyton is also a history/stat buff. if there's a record on the line (i.e. double digit TD seasons), he's gonna do his best for marvin.

It's Harrison. How can you even argue it. Do you want a guy that cruises to double digit TDs every year or a guy who will get double digit TDs if he breaks out and finally surpasses a guy. This is not like having a lightning fast Randy Moss pass a posession guy like Carter. Harrison's game is the same as it was 12 years ago. Wayne's great but don't be deceived. He benefits from playing along side of Harrison. I hope every team in the NFL thinks this is the year that Reggie Wayne passes Marvin Harrison and I hope that every team decides it's time to put their #1 corner on Wayne and their #2 corner on Harrison. I absolutely agree with anyone and everyone who said, Harrison's the man until someboday proves otherwise. I'm an season ticket holder for the Colts and I'm telling you IF Harrison has lost a step, the CBs don't see it. Ask them who is more difficult to defend.
