Terrell Owens - Is the media pushing at this point?

I spend a large amount of time listening to sports shows, and reading articles at online sports sites. Last year, Terrell Owens was mentioned constantly as the media seemed to look for some sort of controversy in anything he did. That is how I seen it anyway.

This year, it seems like the same thing all over again. Terrell Owens, for the most part, minded his business last year, and was actually a very classy person toward the end of the season. Given a chance to throw his quarterback under the bus, and virtually baited into doing by the media at the end of the season, Owens appeared to shock everybody and show nothing but support for his teammate.

Owens started training camp this year, not only practicing, but taking more reps than any other receiver. He was putting in more than his share of work.

Then comes the back problem, which appears to be back spasms. Can Terrell Owens simply have back spasms? Of course not. As soon as he misses practice time, the media is right there accusing Owens of simply trying to get out of practice and trying to get attention.

This seems to have become a witch hunt at this point.

If not a witch hunt then at least sensationalism. The media needs stories, and when everyone they cover is running drills for a month, the best they can do is make mountains out of mole hills. This is especially true for polarizing figures, but also for everyone in the NFL. I think the media tends to sensationalize all of training camp and draws way too many conclusions and stories from it. The reality is that very little can be learned by a veterans performance in camp, or how much time he sits out (unless it's excessive).

It just annoyed me listening to people saying things like "T.O. is up to his old antics, skipping practice" or "Once again, Owens is being a disruption".

I just think enough is enough. Is this sort of talk actually helping the ratings for these media guys? Are people really that interested in Terrell Owens and desperately wanting negative stories about him?

I have to agree that it is indeed out of hand as far as TO is concerned. I noted in the news here that TO had back spasms. Once I had updated the story to say that his MRI showed no back problem it became a non-story for me. Now TO is back at practice and taking full reps at full speed and will probably play in the Thursday pre-season game. Yet I came across a mind-numbing number of TO stories since the MRI results were negative as I researched this last week. Story after story about him missing each of two practices. Each trying to make it a bigger deal than the rest. Duh, it was a no brainer, his bad back was tested showing no damage obviously he will be back in a couple of days. After the MRI came back negative I knew that TO would be back in a couple of days and even went ahead and drafted him in one league.
I read sources everyday that cover everything and there are are over 100 players a day that miss practice time.

I am sorry, but Owens did this to himself. He made his bed...now he has to lie in it. It may not seem fair...but had he just kept his mouth shut in previous years...he wouldn't have this issue

Whether he has brought things on himself or not is irrelevant. If you are listening to sports talk radio, is this something you want to be listening to? If so, and many other share that opinion, then maybe the media guys are giving people what they want.

Personally, I don't think that is the case.

As long as the prick shows up and catches TD passes I could care less what he does.

The Texans fail me every year. Come on Dallas.

Are you speaking from a bandwagon or a crackwagon? C'mon, it doesn't matter what sort of human filth plays for the team you root for as long as they won a SB over a decade ago???

BTW, the Cowboys had a worse record than the Texans in their first 5 years in existence. I am not intending to trash talk as it relates to this particular point, but I'm just sayin.

Going back to the original point, the media is blowing up the back spasm thingy because they are trying to jack with him and see if he freaks. It's what bullies do to reactive explosive people. It's media trolling.

Define bandwagon and crackwagon?

Im thinking by "bandwagon", you think that in the 26 years Ive lived in Texas, I was some how oblivious to the fact that there were two NFL franchises here, or that when I suddenly became aware of them when I turned on the TV and logged on to the internet for the first time ever yesterday, I quickly hopped on board with the one with a better record.

By "crackwagon", Im assuming this is either a poor attempt at humor or a less than hilarious attempt at comedy trying to get me to forget the pain of the Oilers blowing the game with the Bills, or the last years Ive suffered watching Houston come close to being something again only to fall flat in the bottom of the league.

Definitions aside, I like where both teams are headed. I have thoughts of Ahman Green rolling downfield like no one in last 5 years. I think of what Johnson and Co can do now that David Carr is gone and a legitimate NFL QB is under center for the Texans.

I like what Dallas has done with the place as well. TO is behaving, though as stated as long as he does his job I dont care. In either event, Im no so blinded by loyalty that I cant enjoy BOTH of my state's NFL teams in action.

I would think that the above would sufficiently explain "The Texans fail me every year. Come on Dallas". If it doesnt, feel free to post another mindless comment with a poor attempt at humor and I will draw it out longer and in smaller words.

Thanks.

PS - I wonder if you would call him such names if he had a Texans uniform on.....oh of course you would....you might look slighty...hypocritical otherwise

I say leave the man alone.

Yes, part of this is his own fault. Personally, I think he's had some bad luck with his agents (first one: idiot, second: greedy), and fanned some flames when maybe he shoulda stayed quiet.

whatever. he seems to have gotten over these issues, and as mike mentioned, he really stood by romo and the team last year when he could've thrown him/them under the bus. i'm glad for him.

he's a great player, leave him alone. i want to watch him play, not give press conferences. (and i hate dallas!)

I would like to open with "the Cowboys suck"
Now saying that T.O. is an awesome player! He might not think to much before he opens his mouth to the press, but he stands by his words, and does not flip flop. And do you know the press never said a thing when what he had said was the truth.
Why can't we all get a long?!?!
If someone can tell me what bad thing T.O. has done, because I don't remember him driving drunk, or shooting someone!

Ah, but it is relevent Mike. His me, me attitude has pissed off many a fan and listener. So having him hunted now...only makes most happier.

I for one haven't heard much at all on him. Other than the mass paranoia on his possible back issues.

Then again, I don't live in Texas.

Tell you what...I will support you in this...if you support the fact I and alot in Cincinnati are sick and tired of everytime someone regardless of team is arrested or in trouble..the Bengals references stop flying as well.

its training camp, and owens having a back injury is pretty much the biggest story from the cowboys side outside Glenn's injury.
it will pass as the season goes on.

i'm sure lots of pats stations were doing the same thing with moss when he missed some practice time. so i dont necessarily think owens is being singled out.

oh, and Sgt_John, at least your 2nd team (houston) is headed in the right direction... my 2nd team is the raiders... we're hoping for 5 wins! 5!!!

the cowboys better be good this year, or its gonna be a horrible year in football

This is basically what I was asking, or referring to. If people really want their time listening to sports talk to be taken up with media dorks trying to make controversy out of T.O.'s back spasms, then that is fine. I just think that the majority of people would rather not listen to it, and rather listen to something about how teams and players are progressing in camp.

It isn't a local thing at this point, it is the national guys that I spend all day listening to. Guys like Colin Cowherd, Bruno, all the guys on espn, fox sports radio.

And this really isn't a situation of wanting to defend Terrell Owens either. I would just like to hear more about the entire NFL, rather than rants about Terrell Owens and repeating his life history. I am much more interested in hearing if Greg Ellis is any closer to actually practicing with the team yet, since he is supposed to be the starter, or how Calvin Johnson is doing now that he is in camp.

I agree, I would like to hear more about camp battles and such on sports radio, but literally nothing as far as that sort of content goes on the air. I listen to ESPN and nothing about any of the stuff the would interest me. The two locals guys in the afternoon are much more informative than the shock jocks Of ESPN.
