I didn't "forget", I posted the phrase that may have made this memo "misinterpreted"... and then I linked the column that it was taken from.

Again, thats the largest fine in NFL history and the only time a team has been striped of it's 1st round draft pick. To me, thats pretty extreme. Would it have been better if Belicheat was suspended and the team kept their draft pick? To me, the loss of draft pick hurts the team for years as opposed to just a few games.
... and why do we assume that if Belicheat is suspended the team will lose? I think the draft pick was the best punnishment.
You truly need to work on your reading comprehension. Yes, I have said all along that the fine wasn't severe enough. What does that have to do with the rest of your point? This punishment sets a precedence from here on. That is why it needed to be strong. That monetary fine was nothing to BB, and he will simply slide that to Kraft. Hell, kraft already paid it in full with the contract extension. Listen real good here. I have nothing against the Pats. I have always looked at this organization as a True Blue Collar team that worked hard for what they got. What BB got caught doing here, taints everything they have accomplished. These are not the tactics of a hard working team. These are the tactics of a win at all cost coach. Well these tactics have cost the Coach his soul, and the soul of his team and players, in My opinion. Read this well before you simply spout off something else please.

Not to mention, he gets a big fat contract extension immediately after all of this happens.

And a game ball that was probably filled with cash

As we all expected, this isn't going to come out of BB current pay scale. Magically, he gets a contract extension, so the arguement about this being the harshest penalty available is out the window.
As far as everything else, GlennsPatriots, it seems that everywhere you make an arguement on this you use pieces to justify the caving of Goodell. If you pick and choose certain stats and omit others you can make them defend anything. This rule was put in place because the Pats got caught last year doing the same thing in Green Bay. Why do you believe that this penalty was sufficient for the crime? Because they never got to use the video? That's nuts. The intent was still there and the obvious disregard of the commish's mandate makes this arrogent on top of the cheating.

Ah, I see. So it would have been a fair penalty if he hadn't got a contract extention.
The commish specifically stated that the penalty was to be paid by BB and NOT the team or team owner. What more could he do?Forbid the team from giving the extention? Maybe a suspention instead of a fine would have made more sense then.

Nope. The $500,000 is fine. The point is, New England is supporting a cheater by extending his contract and of course it came when BB was slapped with a big fine. Absolutely the suspension would've made more sense rather than the fine. That's what I've been saying since the minute this story broke.

I'm fine with that then.
Some local sports radio guys made the comment that a suspention would make a "marter" (sic?) out of Belicheat... as if he were "taking one for the benifit of the team" so to speak.
By not suspending him and taking a draft pick instead the organization suffers in a "make the whole team run after practice instead of the one guy that screwed up" theory.
I do think the $, the draft pick AND a suspention would have been harsh.
I'm curious, had he been suspended, would the team continue winning anyway?
Would they bring in an interem head coach (imagine Marty Schottenheimer or Bill Parcells. HA!)?
We may find out soon enugh if the commish finds more dirt.

-- Patriots Not Stopping Opponents in Red Zone --
Tue Sep 25, 2007 --from FFMastermind.com
The Boston Globe reports Patriots HC Bill Belichick railed about the defense's lack of proficiency in the red zone. With Bills RB Marshawn Lynch's 8-yard TD run, teams have now scored five touchdowns in five trips inside the red zone against New England, the worst mark in the league. "We haven't stopped anybody yet," said Belichick. "It starts with me: Coach them a little better, then maybe we'll play better. If we play better, maybe we'll stop somebody. We need to do that. You can't let them in the end zone every time they cross the 20-yard line. It's ridiculous."

Patriots have given up 14, 14 and 7 points in their 1st 3 games.
Heads are gonna roll if they don't improve on this when Rodney Harrison and Richard Seymour are back on the field.

I'm guessing that the 49rs finish the season at 5-11 and get the 6th overall pick in the draft (which the Patriots own, ...you know, ...the one that they didn't lose)
The Patriots then take that #6 pick and trade down to #20 or so, picking up an extra 2nd rd pick (or an extra #1 for '08)

  • -- Matt Walsh Update --
    Fri Apr 18, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com
  • The Boston Herald reports it has been more than two months since the name Matt Walsh entered the local sports lexicon, and we may finally be close to knowing what light, if any, he can shed on the Patriots' videotaping practices. Speaking at the SMU athletic forum luncheon in Texas on Wednesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell expressed hope that a deal allowing the former Patriots video assistant to talk will be struck soon. "I have never met Matt but I'm hoping to meet him some time in the near future," Goodell told those in attendance in comments relayed by the Dallas Morning News. "He's indicated he has evidence and new information that would lead to further disciplinary action. I'm anxious to meet with him. I hope that'll happen some time in the next couple weeks."
