Priest Holmes and the future of Larry Johnson

First let me qualify this as strictly MY opinion. I am not basing this on anything I have read, or has been reported...I am just reading between the lines....per say.

Also, let me say I am an owner of Larry Johnson...so I may seem biased...but am trying not to be.

Now, lets first admit KC is having major issues. They don't get to play Cincy every week...so lets throw last weeks numbers out.

That being said....is KC really hoping Priest is okay? I think yes. LJ has done nothing but tick off everyone and whine. He is a heck of a player...but he is immature, and a royal pain. I honestly think the only reason KC resigned him was due to lack of better alternatives...and just giving away that much talent. Now, if Priest is back, and healthy, and proves it....I think LJ is gone next year. The cap savings...and the loss of head ache would be huge for a team that will need to rebuild around a young Qb next year in Croyle.

Where will LJ go? I don't know, but putting together all the rumors of pre-draft trade, all the contract huff...a pretty reasonable contract to absorb, and a bad attitude..and my gut says he will be gone to a new team.

I can't say that I understand the money in the NFL. I have no idea of how thw cap works, or how his new salary hits it yaerly. I do think the hit will get a bit worse each year. I think it will be real hard for the team to find suitors unless LJ is willing to renegotiate. Now he might be willing to do this if NE comes calling. It is going to be awfully tough for KC to move him. After these next 5 games or so, they probably won't want to, as his schedule really has began to loosen up, starting last week.

I think this conversation is way premature... lets let holmes come in and have his first yard in almost 2 years then we can talk about him unseating/replacing LJ... I agree that KC would want to move LJ if Priest comes back as he left but what team would want two high impact RBs. I think LJ was very smart to hold out and "get paid like LT" this offseason before his value went down.

This is exactly what I said he would do before the season started. He was doing it last year when the Chiefs struggled, no reason to think he wouldn't do it this year.

I don't really think it comes down to the Chiefs waiting to see what Priest Holmes can do though. I have a strong feeling that the Chiefs will move on without Larry Johnson after this year regardless, unless the coach ends up moving on instead. I can't see both of these guys returning next season to the same team.

Chiefs will be looking toward free agency most likely.

even at full health, I don't expect the 34 year old Holmes to unseat the 20 something LJ. Preist will be a nice 3rd down back and come in as LJ needs a blow but unless this Kolby Smith kid is expected to be a feature back, I don't see LJ going anywhere.

The Chiefs would lose a pile of money against the cap if they released Larry Johnson after this season. He's got $19 million guaranteed; if they released him, they would have to write a check for 5/6th's of $19million against the cap next year. Not gonna happen.

Also, Herm Edwards loves Larry Johnson. They have nothing but praise for LJ in press conferences. I have watched/read every Chiefs press conference this year and Herm constantly reiterates that, if they want to win, they have to get the ball into the hands of their best player and that player is Larry Johnson.

Notice, LJ has rushed for over 100 yards twice this year and they are 2-0 in those games. Have any of you actually watched him run? He looks sick. The offensive line play has been poor. On the two 30+ yard runs he's had this season, LJ has literally created something out of nothing.

Also of note is LJ's schedule. MIN, JAC, and SD are two teams that no one is running against right now. CHI was not a team to run against when KC faced them in week 2 (before they lost 5 starters). He only had 10 touches against HOU. With 2 games against OAK and 2 against DEN and TEN, DET, and IND on the schedule, LJ is probably going play like a consensus top 5 pick.

Notice that the activation of Priest Holmes coincided with the trading of Michael Bennett. Who is being replaced here? Herm has been transparent about his intended use of Priest Holmes. Specifically, he's likely to replace LJ on 3rd and longs because he likes Priest's pass protection ability and he likes his ability to catch the ball in space (two things LJ has not done a good job of this year).

The idea that KC is going to abandon 28-yr old LJ after this season in favor of a 34-yr old player who hasn't practiced for 2 years is laughable. That won't ever happen.
