Carter Signs With NY Jets

Former Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter has signed with the New York Jets Tuesday, and will compete for the backup job behind Chad Pennington.

Carter was released by the Cowboys on Aug. 4, less than a week into training camp, for reasons still unspecified by the team or the NFL. Although it has been reported the quarterback failed a second drug test and is subject to a fine worth four game checks for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Carter, who started 31 games in three years with the Cowboys, will compete with backups Ricky Ray and Brooks Bollinger, who recently suffered a sprained knee.

Ironically, Carter joins the team that released veteran Vinny Testaverde, who signed with the Cowboys and replaced Carter as the starting quarterback after his sudden release.

Testaverde played six seasons with the Jets, and started seven games last season when Pennington was out with a broken wrist.

Last season (2003), the Cowboys went 10-6 with Carter as the starting quarterback and returned to the playoffs for the first time since 1999. In his 16 starts, he threw for a career-high 3,302 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 21 interceptions (both career-highs).

I had heard great things about the CFL QB... Ricky Ray... I'm drawing a blank on the name now. I'm thinking Carter is insurance for this year in case the CFL'r doesn't pan out.

this has been a unique story, huh? Q Carter (starter for Dallas) goes as backup to the Jets, and V Testeverde (back up for Jets) comes to Dallas as the starter...who would have figured this??
