NFL News And Rumors: Post Pro Bowl- Month of February

Big Drop off in the News thread after the Super Bowl. We only put up two pages of info going into the Super Bowl. I am going to try putting all of the News for the rest of February in one thread. We want to cover all the news in as compact a form as possible. At least for awhile, until the draft nears. I am hoping the News in the offseason will then be available to all to recap by just reading a few threads. I hope you will all hang around and add to the news and discuss the issues as it happens. We will be here working in the meantime to keep up with the news. I would like to thank all those who stopped by the last couple of weeks and participated in the Pro-Bowl edition of the News.

Dolphins Drop Nine From Their Roster

Quarterback Trent Green was acquired by the Miami Dolphins last year as part of a plan to turn the franchise's fortunes around, now he is gone.

Not a big surprise to me as he hasn't been a reliable starter since his big Bang to the head. He is probably better suited to being a backup if he continues to play. WR Marty Booker was also among the players dropped. Frankly I am glad to see this as he has been barely playing good enough (not really) to be the #2 WR and the Dolphins have some young talent that they need to get on the field

ESPN - Green, Booker among nine cuts by rebuilding Dolphins - NFL

Panthers cut Morgan and Wahle

ESPN - Panthers release former first-round pick Morgan, guard Wahle - NFL

I wonder if the 'Hawks could use a year or so from Wahle. They need help at Guard now and he's from Portland Ore.

Parcells does like to build from the lines up. He will probably go with some FA guys as well as draft some Linemen. Anthony Wright wasn't even in the rotation. Traynor was playing well this season but ended up on IR in Dec. with a nagging knee problem and is a 16 year vet

Ravens Suggs: Extension or Franchise Tag?

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome confirmed Monday that Terrell Suggs will be franchise tagged if he's not signed to a long-term deal by February 21. Suggs would be tagged as a linebacker at $8.065 million if he is not signed by Thursday.

SportingNews.com reports ESPN's Monday Night Football dropped Suzy Kolber and Michele Tafoya as sideline reporters. It is not known if ESPN plans to go without sideline reporters for the upcoming 2008 season, or replace Kolber and Tafoya with different reporters. Monday Night Football will retain both Kolber and Tafoya, but their precise roles are being determined.

Ravens | Heap already begins offseason workouts
Sun, 10 Feb 2008 09:26:16 -0800
Mike Preston, of the Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens TE Todd Heap (hamstring) has already begun offseason workouts in Baltimore. "I was so frustrated after this past year trying to get on the field, but my hamstring wouldn't allow it. The biggest thing right now is to get it right through offseason preparation," Heap said. He is confident he will be able to return to the field in 2008 at 100 percent and be ready to go. "After my two worst injuries, including the high ankle sprain in 2001, I came back to have my two best seasons."

Broncos, Raiders :: RB

Raiders RB Fargas Could Fit In Denver
Bill Williamson, Denver Post - [Full Article]

Oakland Raiders running back Justin Fargas should be popular on the free-agent market. He finished the season strong and will get a lot of looks. Fargas is interested in remaining in Oakland, but will go to the open market, if necessary. Fargas could be a fit in Denver, since the Raiders employed the zone-blocking scheme Denver popularized. But the Broncos aren't likely to spend big money on a running back, especially if they agree with Travis Henry on a restructured contract.

Would love Orgazmo's take on this. Isn't Young the guy?

They don't think Young can handle the full load. It has sounded like they would bring Henry back at less money and run him and Young as a thunder and lightning type committee.

While it was impressive Fargas managed what he did without getting hurt, I'd be pretty pissed if the Broncos overpaid for him and his background.

I know, it just seems they should have learned the lesson of trying the older guy there last year. Shanny's forte is riding a new young guy for a solid year, then dumping him. I figured this might be Young's year.

Heres some news that will be hot today

"Numerous league sources" tell the Washington Post that the Redskins are interested in trading for Chad Johnson.

Here we go. Two sources say Johnson is "eager" to get a new contract from the Redskins, confirming that Chad's main beef with the Bengals is about money. With a coaching staff almost fully in place, owner Dan Snyder's top priority is known to be acquiring a No. 1 receiver. While the Bengals aren't interested in moving Johnson currently, sources tell the Post that agent Drew Rosenhaus is actively working to broker a deal. It would probably take a pair of early first day draft picks to get Johnson

The Redskins now view Ladell Betts solely as a backup to Clinton Portis.

Joe Gibbs used to call Portis and Betts interchangeable. Betts will be used more on special teams this year, replacing free agent KR Rock Cartwright. New coach Jim Zorn raved about Portis' receiving ability at his introductory presser. It sounds like Betts could even lose his third-down role in 2008

Henry was brought in to be "the guy".
Injuries and controversy got in the way of that.

Bad News On McIntosh Could Send Redskins Shopping

Redskins WLB Rocky McIntosh may have a degenerative condition in both knees. This could be i a huge disappointment for the Redskins. McIntosh got off to a torrid start in 2007, only to tear both his ACL and MCL in Week 15. We could end up seeing Lance Briggs on the Redskins' radar this offseason as a replacement if they go looking via Free Agency.

Vikes FS Smith Dodges A Bullet

Judd Zulgad, of the Star Tribune, reports a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession against Minnesota Vikings FS Dwight Smith has been dismissed, according to Smith's attorney, David Valentini. Valentini said Smith pleaded guilty to obstructing traffic and paid a $200 fine. The charges stemmed from an incident Dec. 13 when Minneapolis police cited Smith for impeding traffic at an intersection.

Close call for Smith, could be fined still but no suspension.
