Miami Takes Long and Trade Rumors Fly

Well it looks like the old Parcells addage is true. Bill Parcells builds his lines up first. Before signing Long nobody wanted to trade up. But now that Miami is committed to a OL suddenely there is a extra top D guy that will be around to draft.
Suddenly, KC is willing to part with Jared Allen because their #5 will net them a top D prospect so letting Allen go doesn't sound so risky. Other teams looking for a top D prospect are looking to move up now that we know there is an extra top D Prospect around.
Other teams may be ready to move up to grab a QB although that is not really related to Miamis signing so much. But it is a snowball effect, if several teams trade up to grab D guys or a QB that means all bets are off. There were a nice bunch of QBs waiting in the second round as a good value pick. This now may not be true any longer . Every team that trades down so someone else can grab a top D guy or the top QB will be a wild card to grab one of these second round QBs. After these trades they may have lower first round picks or additional 2nd round picks. Those second tier/second round QBs that you thought may be there may now not be around with other teams getting extra picks before you.

Thanks, Bill Parcells, your dull predictable pick has just made the entire draft more exciting.

jake long may be dull and predictable but history says that it was probably also the best pick. high drafted OL are the surest bet, and for the money this team is paying a player, they have to get a sure thing. theyre better off with a B+ player that is a sure thing then swinging for the fences with a $70 million guy that could either be an A or a D-.

I agree with Da_Bomb. The dull predictable pick may very well be the best one of all. Parcells has always done this and it usually works for him. Miami with the first pick has now become a non-story for most but it looks like a chain reaction of trading potential has started. Rigth now teams are looking to move up because of that potential extra Top D man. But a few rounds later we may see a lot of small movements to get certain OLineman also. Teams that trade down and end up with extra picks become a real Wild Card to a draft that was well thought out by teams up to this point.
A lot of teams sounded very content to wait To the second round to get a QB. The thinking being that there are 3 good QBs waiting in the second round and while a couple of other teams may grab a couple we will just grab the 3rd one. This plan may not work out so well now. It's all has a lot more intrigue now.

I think the signing and pick of Jake WAS the right move. You have to build your linees to win. You have to make holes for your star back, and you have to protect your Qb.

As for trades...here is my prediction:
There will be a trade UP into the top 5. Either St. Louis, Atlanta or KC will make a trade down. Dorsey or Gholston will be the target though...not McFadden.

I also predict like you all, whoever wastes a first round pick on Ryan will regret it in the long run. Having done further research...I would much, much rather risk a 2nd on Flacco or Brohm.

The steal of this draft will be Wr Kelly if he falls out of the first round.

God that hurts.......Interesting story I heard today. At the combine that year, a QB who would go on to be productive and lead his team to a Super Bowl was bumped out of his combine appearance by Leaf....

His name was Matt Hasselbeck....interesting.

I respect your opinions, always have...but you tell me how the hell a guy that can get out ran one on one by a linebacker with his blazing "4.6" speed is a steal?

I don't think the 4.6 was legit. I also don't think you can teach sepperation and going for the ball. He has incredible hands and catches everything.

Speaking of trade rumors, I just posted in the News forum that new speculation is rising about Jason Taylor being traded for picks. Fins are looking for a 1st rounder.

Brett Martel, of The Associated Press, reports the New Orleans Saints are looking to bolster their pass rush in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Brett Martel, of The Associated Press, reports New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the Saints have talked to a number of teams in front of them about the possibility of moving up in the 2008 NFL Draft.

A little KFFL ditti about the draft. Note number of teams. Looks like the Saints want to get on of the top D prosects but which one is not as important. They must reguard the top D Guys as being fairly equal, just so long as we do get one of them.

With teams trading up for D Guys does QB Matt Ryan fall to the Ravens at 8?

If Ryan is gone, Do they go D? Say LB. I believe they have 3 LBs that will be looking for new contracts soon.

Trade rumors regarding Jason Taylor are flying on the Fins boards. Right now the favorite seems to be a trade w/ Jax where Miami gets their #1 and Jax gets JT, plus the teams swap fourths. I would go for that trade all day long.

i dont see how jason taylor can fetch a #1 at this point in his career. seems ludicrous if you ask me. then again, the jags need DL help and certainly wont get anyone as good as taylor that late, even if only for 2-3 years.

I think it was. He only marginally improved on it on a "fast" track later on.

Malcolm Kelly Scouting Report - 2008 NFL Draft Prospect

Possession Receiver. Poor Mans Dwayne Jarrett. Injury concerns to BOTH knees. Not something I spend 1st round money on.

You may not be able to teach seperation, and he may have great hands, but so did Wayne Chrebet, but I don't think anyone believes that he was a first round talent either. In college, he could get away with 4.6 speed because two thirds of the guy he lined up against couldn't run a 4.6 on their best day. This the NFL, where corner are running 4.4's and 4.3's. He's not going to seperate himself from guys that are tremendously faster then him, and nobody wants a receiver who has to jump up and fight a defender for every catch, they want a guy that's going to burn away from their guy and get open.

University of Texas RB Jamaal Charles said he had a private workout with the Detroit Lions.

So if NYG TE Jeremy Shockey gets traded to the Saints does he do better there?
