49'ers Quarterback Competition

J.T. O'Sullivan is going to get his 2nd consecutive pre-season start this week.

Most have been expecting Alex Smith to be the starter this year, but at this point, is it looking to you like Smith may be on the outside looking in this year?

They have been high on Sullivan and Hill. Will Smith be the outsider looking in? I have to say no for right now. I think the 49ers are just trying to insure Sullivan is up to speed on the playbook so when he does get called upon to play, he'll be ready.

Martz seems to favor JT, and with Martz always expect the unexpected. I would not be suprised one bit if he is the starter week 1.

As Martz/Nolan has said they will go with whoever gives them the best chance to win. If its JTO, then I'm for it. I just feel bad for Smith because since he's been in the league he's had a different OC each year. You put any QB in that situation and they will struggle to. I hope Martz stays around for a few years to mentor Smith as I truly see him better than Hill and JTO.

The coaches may just be tired of holding back the team waiting for Smith and Hill to learn the playbook. O'Sullivan does know it, but Smith should be talented enough to overtake him once he's digested everything.

At this rate, Smith is going to be playing himself right out of a roster spot by the end of this season.
