Raiders: FB O'Neal, WR Carter Out for Season

.........

Quote:
It's just an exhibition game, and one lost on the backs of many players who won't be around when the 53-man roster comes due in a week. But the fact is, Saturday's dud at The Coliseum was worse than pointless. It was painful to watch, with season-ending left knee injuries to fullback Oren O'Neal and wide receiver Drew Carter - all within the first 2 minutes of the game.

Suddenly, the Raiders must scramble to find capable replacements with the final roster due next Saturday. Then, they must ask those players to figure out their offensive system in time to make a difference in the Sept. 8 season opener against the Broncos.

"Very disappointing night, right from the start," Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said. "That's the last thing you want to have happen in a preseason game. It wasn't a very good sign."

For sure, O'Neal's injury on the opening kickoff sucked the life out of the Raiders. Carter's injury four plays later drained the adrenaline remaining from pregame introductions.

By game's end, the Raiders were shut out for the first time in 67 exhibition games - not that Kiffin gives a flying rat about the scoreboard this time of year.

"The outcome really doesn't matter," Kiffin said. "We lost two significant parts of what our offense hoped to be, so not very good from that perspective."

Not good for the run game, because O'Neal established himself as the lead blocker for the tailbacks. He didn't start as a rookie, but he often played more snaps than starter Justin Griffith.

And, certainly not good for the passing game because Carter is one of the few players who made a downfield connection with quarterback JaMarcus Russell in the offseason.
A loss that hurts / O'Neal and Carter incur season-ending injuries

This really sucks for the Raiders. Oneal was the much better blocker for the running game, but they still have Griffith who is a "decent" backup. I really had high hopes for Drew Carter this season. He had an awesome TC and was going to be the down field threat for the Raiders and somebody who I had picked as a sleeper.

On the fantasy side I think it moves Z. Miller from sleeper status to starter. The RB's for the Raiders should jump in value, even with the loss of Oneal, as they again will be a run first team.

Raiders Lose WR Drew Carter For The Season

The Contra Costa Times reports Oakland Raiders WR Drew Carter (knee) is out for the 2008 season after suffering a torn ACL Saturday.

It has been interesting in drafts up to now. Both Carter and Ronald Curry have been in a Battle to be the starter out in Oakland. Both have been going later in drafts but very close to one another since it wasn't known who would start and get the bigger piece of the pie. Put Curry up a few notches as his value has jumped if you have yet to draft. Those who already chose Carter need to hit that first waiver wire hard and fast. In real football terms the Raiders WR Corps just took a big blow.

Coachnorm and I are on the same page.

To add to what Coach said above, fantasy wise the Raiders have again become a run first team, so Raider running backs should see some increase in value.
