Mathias Kiwanuka Back To Defensive End, Replacing Osi Umenyiora

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants moved Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end to replace the injured Osi Umenyiora on Monday, a decision that decreases the already slim chances of the Super Bowl champions needing to make a push to get seven-time Pro Bowler Michael Strahan out of retirement.

"Obviously this is not the way you want it to happen but it's an opportunity for a lot of guys, and I am one of the guys who has to step up and take advantage of it," said Kiwanuka, who walked off the field with defensive line coach Mike Waufle well after teammates left the field following a short morning walk through.

The Giants' first-round draft pick in 2006, Kiwanuka was moved from defensive end to strongside linebacker last season so the team could get its best 11 defenders on the field.

If Strahan was simply seeing his former team in trouble and wanting to go back for the sake of helping the team, I could see it being a successful move.

Everything I am hearing points to the guy simply posturing for a big payday. I would be very concerned about whether his head was in the right place at this point. Being out of football for a while is one thing, but being out with no intention of playing until a day ago, missing the entire offseason and preseason (and not working out to keep himself in football shape), and having to come back without Osi on the opposite side, I don't see this as a good move.

Tuck is a legit end and could have been superbowl MVP last season. Kiwanuka is returning to his natural position so they should be alright w/o stray.
