Shawne Merriman To Be Placed On IR

Playing just one week after deciding to skip surgery and play the season, Shawne Merriman will in fact have reconstructive knee surgery, ending his 2008 season.

Merriman was in and out of the lockerroom for much of the game in week 1, not due to pain in the knee, but because the brace that he was wearing to stabilize the "side to side" kept sliding down his leg. Since there appeared to be no suitable replacement that would work either, Merriman felt that it woud be best to go ahead an shut it down for the season and get the surgery done.

Had the brace stayed in place properly, he may have been able to play the entire season.

Ultimately, I think it was best for Merriman that the brace kept slipping, because had he kept playing, I think permanent damage likely would have occurred.

all in all, good for him. He now could have plenty of time to get surgery done, and be rehabbed in time for next year.

I guess he tried it and realized...man I am dumb. I need to have the surgery...LOL

Guys got more balls than brains that's for sure. I still commend him for going out there and giving it a shot though.

I don't really commend him for it. I think that it was a really stupid move on his part, and I agree that he probably realized that it was a bad idea. I also agree with Mike that, if the brace had held, I think that more permanent damage would have been done..
