Henderson and Meachem both involve some risk since you don't know which of them is going to move where now, but I like Henderson better.

With Lance Moore and Copper in the mix, at least we know that Henderson will be seeing the field (because he was already). Meachem might still remain a fantasy ghost.

In a nutshell. It's all about special teams.

-- Meachem Watch --
Mon Sep 8, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports Saints HC Sean Payton said that he did not envision second-year WR Robert Meachem, who was inactive for Week 1's game against the Buccaneers, being declared inactive the entire year. But it is not clear who Payton would sit to elevate Meachem. Starting WR Marques Colston and WR David Patten and No. 3 WR Devery Henderson appear secure. Reserves WR Lance Moore and WR Terrance Copper are better special teams players. It's going to be a weekly quandary for Payton.

Honestly something just doesn't make sense to me on Meachem. Last year he was hurt...so I understand the not using him. This year though he seemed to do well in pre-season, heard no negatives during camp...but he still can't seem to break through. It isn't like Patten or Henderson are the end all be all. Just makes me wonder if Meachem is in Payton's dog house or some such.

-- Meachem's Success Puts Henderson on the Bubble --
Thu Aug 14, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com
The Sporting News reports New Orleans Saints second-year WR Robert Meachem made a strong case for the No. 3 receiver job in the preseason opener at Arizona, catching four passes for 129 yards, including a diving 49-yard catch in the second quarter and a sensational 60-yard touchdown catch-and-run in the fourth. Meachem is practically a rookie this year -- or better yet, a redshirt freshman -- after not playing in a single game last year, mostly due to a nagging knee injury. He has his health and his confidence back, though, and he is starting to show the combination of size and speed that got him drafted in the first round out of Tennessee. His main competition is fifth-year veteran WR Devery Henderson, who has established himself as one of the league's top deep threats in recent years, but has struggled mightily with dropped passes. Henderson was already in a precarious position even before he missed the past two weeks of training camp with a hamstring injury. Meachem should earn a roster spot regardless, considering his upside. Henderson almost certainly needs to clearly establish himself as the No. 3 guy to keep his job on the team.

-- Devery Henderson Impressing --
Fri Aug 15, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com
The Advocate reports even though New Orleans Saints WR Devery Henderson (right hamstring) was sidelined for 14 practices with a hamstring injury early in training camp, wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson likes what he's seen lately from the five-year veteran. Henderson also missed last week's exhibition opener with the Arizona Cardinals after hurting his right hamstring on the fourth day of practice in Jackson, Miss., which won't help him in his fight to keep his spot on the 53-man regular-season roster. But since returning to practice last Saturday after almost two weeks on the shelf, Henderson has shown Johnson something. "Devery looks real good, he's running well," Johnson said Thursday after a practice with the Houston Texans. "He gets a little tired and a little winded, like Marques Colston, but other than that he's improved. He dropped one (pass) today, but he came right back and caught three in a row. That's one of the things that's encouraging about him this year. I hadn't seen that from him in the past." Johnson said one of the things he sees in Henderson is that he's not as tense as he used to be, which contributed to his inconsistency on the field. Since he missed so much practice time earlier, Saturday night's exhibition game with the Texans and the Aug. 23 game against the Cincinnati Bengals could be crucial to Henderson's chances. "I think the next two games are important for everyone," Johnson said. "Devery's got to get back to form and get back to running deep and doing what he can do. He's one of our speed guys. He has to get back and get the feel for it and get back to doing what he's capable of doing — and do some of the things he did in 2006."

-- Henderson Ahead of Meachem? --
Thu Aug 21, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com
THe Times-Picayune reports with two preseason games to go, it appears WR Devery Henderson is on pace to play as a first-stringer -- and WR Robert Meachem is not. When asked Wednesday whether Henderson is fighting more for a roster spot or playing time, Payton said: "I see him fighting more for playing time. He's out with the first group, so when you look at Marques (Colston) and you look at Devery, those guys are right now lining up with the first group. Devery's competing against those other guys behind him. WR Lance Moore, WR Robert Meachem, those guys are wanting to get more snaps." But asked if he wanted to see Meachem get more time playing with QB Drew Brees, Payton said: "Yeah, but that's got to be something that's earned. And right now, there are guys ahead of him, just from an overall efficiency level. And Robert's improved, and yet he's still got a ways to go."

-- Saints Trust Henderson More than Meachem --
Mon Sep 1, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com
The New Orleans Saints' coaching staff still views WR Devery Henderson as a top-three receiver, and his main competition, WR Robert Meachem, who looked like he would surpass Henderson on the depth chart early in camp, may be having issues with consistency. According to PFW, the Saints trust Henderson more at this point, and it will stay that way until Meachem corrects some of his route running and missed assignments. WR Marques Colston and WR David Patten are the team's top two receivers.

-------------------------------------------
Progressing through these articles, it is safe to assume that meachem was the getting his because of the injury to Devery. It turned on a dime as henderson got healthy. The mention of consistency and missing assignments makes me wonder if he doesn't work downfield blocking hard enough. With a guy like Bush, you want your wideouts to block. I bet that has something to do with it.

That news/opinion confuses me.

Bottom line is Meachem will get an opportunity to prove or disprove himself now in terms of receiving, blocking ability, and consistency in an actual NFL game.

Last year's Meachem was on overhyped guy that got fat and then got injured. This year, he appears focused.

Why did the Saints not go with him in week 1? My opinion, the other guys earned playing time from the previous year, either on this team, or another team. Meachem simply has to earn his way into the rotation after his lazy approach after being drafted.

What will New Orleans do this week? You can read all the opinons you want, but nobody is going to know until Sean Payton tell us, and good luck getting Payton to tip his hat this early in the week, if at all.

I wouldn't worry about Brees. Brees isn't a product of his receivers, they are more a product of him.

I simply wondered what assignments he missed, and if they had anything to do with the injury to Bush in preseason, or to Colston for that matter. He had a few good games statistically, yet still lost ground with his coach when they were finished. Bubble talk for Henderson became "Meachem has to be more consistent, and quit missing assignments." We will see.

Nothing concrete, but it keeps being said that this injury is most likely going to lean more toward 6 weeks, rather than the possible 4.

At least I picked up Patten off waivers in one league.
