Old news (happened Thursday), but being so wrapped up in other things, I totally missed this in the news on Coachs http://www.sportsoutlaw.com/forum/65225-post56.html

Quote:
The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs OL John Welbourn has announced his retirement from the NFL. "I decided to retire on my own terms rather than somebody else's," Welbourn told The Associated Press. He said he would be filing the paperwork on his retirement with the NFL office. "I discussed this with the Chiefs a couple of weeks ago," said Welbourn, who participated in last month's minicamp but has been unhappy that the Chiefs would not renegotiate terms of his contract. Kansas City plans to keep him on the active roster for now, in case he changes his mind.
So, this most likely puts Kyle Turley, out of the NFL for two years, as the frontrunner for the starting Right Tackle spot. For an aging offensive line, this is not real good news. Welbourn, while not an old guy, was a 7 year vet and one of the youngest on the line.

Depth is becoming an issue here. Turley was most likely going to end up backing up the left tackle spot unless he beat out Welboun. Welbourn would have at least remained the backup right tackle, and was also the #2 guy at right and left guard.

This is a potential depth issue for the Chiefs as far as O line goes. But never say never again?

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports days after Kansas City Chiefs OL John Welbourn announced his surprise retirement, Chiefs' head coach Herm Edwards said he isn't ruling out the possibility that Welbourn, a veteran starter, could change his mind. "You hate to see good players decide to retire, but that was his choice at this point," Edwards said Tuesday, June 20. "There's nothing to say a guy can't unretire and come back. I've seen guys do that. We'll see what happens, but right now we're moving on without him, and we'll see what happens."

The Chiefs could only hope he returns, but the chances are not too good right now. And if he does return, missing minicamps and such wont be good for him. All it does is increase you chances for injuries in camp.

I still think that the issues with the Chiefs offensive line this year should be a pretty big concern. Everyone is assuming that these guys are simply going to jump in and play like they did last year. They were old last year, they are a year older this year, and not as deep. I have witnessed offensive lines getting old almost overnight in Dallas and it isnt a pretty picture.

Kyle Turley is a huge reach for this team. Do you really want a guy who has been out of the NFL for 2 years possibly becoming your anchor at right tackle?
