The Cleveland Browns are considering Vinny Testaverde as their backup?
Ken Dorsey will get the chance to win the backup spot, but Testaverde appears to be plan B.
NFL News » Blog Archive » Browns Considering Tesaverde As Backup
Quote:
The Cleveland Browns will give quarterback Ken Dorsey a chance in training camp to secure the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind starter Charlie Frye, but head coach Romeo Crennel made it clear as his team completed a three-day minicamp over the weekend that the phone number for free agent veteran Vinny Testaverde is on his speed dial.

Testaverde
Crennel never mentioned Testaverde by name, but joked at one point that the player he had in mind as a potential insurance policy was “older than me” and noted that his familiarity with the offense system meant he “could come in on Friday and he’d be good to go on Sunday.” It didn’t take a rocket scientist to make the connection.

I don't think this too much a shocker. They want a vet presence to help the young QB to mature, and at the same time not be a threat to his starting job. Were they to go and sign a Kerry Collins or some such..the kid would keep looking back. I also think they won't sign Testaverde unless Dorsey completely flops as #2 in camp.

Dont you want a quarterback you can trust to send in though just in case Frye gets hurt? Surely the coaching staff can handle having younger, more capable quarterback in the mix than Testaverde if Dorsey should fail.

Vinny gets worse by the minute. He was absolutely dreadful in Dallas, and worse in New York. The guy simply cannot help an NFL team at this point. Not to mention there isnt room on the teams Jet for his walker.

Who would you suggest? Who out there is any real better option? Of all the QBs unsigned...the only ones I think you can talk about freely are Collins and Fiedler. Fiedler actually would be a solid option...if he is fully back from the shoulder issues. I just don't see Collins being able to "mentor" a young Qb.

I dont think they are looking for a "mentor", they are simply looking for insurance as a backup quarterback. Shouldn't matter anyway as I cant see any way that Testaverde would be brought in over Dorsey.

Just hearing Testaverde's name come up as a possible quarterback for anybody amazes me at this point. They guy has been washed up for a while now.

Sounds like the Browns, Redskins, Titans, Pats and Redskins are all looking for QB depth to some degree. There is not a big qb pool out there right now. Crennel didn't mention the verticaltesticle or anyone by name.

Dilfer was traded to the 49ers for Dorsey to eliminate the threat of QB controversy in Cleveland. The Niners wanted an vet and mentor to Smith as a backup. Now that Dorsey looks shaky at #2 the Browns want a vet again.

I though he had moved but couldnt remember for sure. He isnt one of those guys I keep up with closely, and nfl.com is still showing him on the Browns depth chart.
