Exclamation

From SportsOutlaw.com's newsblog:

Quote:
Among the players placed on waivers were running back Antowain Smith, who lost the third position to Chris Taylor, an undrafted rookie. Barring another move at that position, the Texans will enter the season with three backs who have a combined one season of experience.

Smith, linebacker Sam Cowart, fullback Nick Luchey and guard David Loverne were four players cut with at least eight years of experience.
"(Waiving Smith) was very difficult," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He played extremely well, but Chris did, too. It was a decision about youth and Chris' ability to become a returner.

"Antowain's a great guy. One of the things that impressed me about him was how much he helped those young guys who were after his job."
Holy freaking crap.

Agreed. But this cut takes some major cahones given the turbulence in the Texan backfield. Smith has always been insurance. Now there is a ton of youth in the backfield should Davis be done.

True, Morency who is a second year guy, and two rookies in Lundy and Taylor. I think it is a good move though. You are building for the future in Houston. Taking a flyer on Taylor and seeing if he continues to develop is a smart move over hanging on to a guy like Antowain Smith.

Antowain Smith can still help a team, from a backup standpoint, that is a playoff contender, but he serves no purpose for a team like Houston.

Although he could have provided some leadership and experience while teaching those younger guys.

Still, I agree with both of your points. Keep the younger guys.

Antowain Smith is not a player I would want my young running backs learning from. Half of this guys career was spent wasting his talent by seemingly not putting a full effort out on the field.

Smith actually looked pretty good the 4th game but there wasn't many first teamers out there. Looked better than Taylor.

Chris Taylor looked really nice in camp. Started running out of gas by the end of camp.

Hopefully, the magic RB dust Kubiak has been sprinkling keeps going. The backs have looked really good in the preseason.
